On the 5th July 1904, a group of piping enthusiasts called a meeting in Stornoway to consider the formation of a pipe band.

After some discussion the meeting agreed to bring the Lewis Pipe Band into existence, with a complement of six pipers and three drummers. Today, over a hundred years later, the Lewis Pipe Band is still going strong as one of the oldest of its kind in Scotland.

In Scotland's Outer Hebrides, on the east coast of Scalpay, stands Eilean Glas Lighthouse, looking out across the Minch the twenty miles to the Isle of Skye. Wild and remote, a light has been kept here to guide mariners since 1789, making it one of the earliest lighthouses in Scotland.

Automatic since 1978, it still shows three flashes every twenty seconds to guide today's shipping in the Minch.

Ceòlas is a music and dance summer school featuring expert tuition in piping, fiddling, singing, Scotch reels and Quadrilles, step dancing and the Gaelic language. A week full of classes, concerts, craic and community spirit. It is set within the Gaelic-speaking community of South Uist.

Ceòlas explores the vital connections between Scottish traditional music, Gaelic song and dance while allowing ample opportunity for participants to enjoy all these art forms in cèilidhs and in homes, the places which fostered them.

Nestled on a small island off Castlebay on the Isle of Barra, Kisimul Castle is a medieval stronghold steeped in history. Dating back to the 15th century, its name derives from the Norse "ciosamul," meaning "castle island." As the only remaining medieval castle in the Outer Hebrides, it captivates visitors with its rugged beauty and breathtaking views of the surrounding seascape.

Currently undergoing conservation efforts, Kisimul Castle remains temporarily closed to visitors, preserving its historic integrity. Nevertheless, it remains an iconic spot for photographs from Castlebay, showcasing its timeless charm against the picturesque backdrop of the islands.

The Old Man of Storr on the Trotternish Ridge is probably the most famous walk, and the busiest attraction, on the Isle of Skye, famous for its magnificent scenery and views. It is a 55-metre-high pinnacle of basalt rock which is all that remains of a 2,800-million-year-old volcanic plug. You can take the opportunity to walk up and down the Storr on a 3.8km route, that takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete.

After what feels like months of endless rain, wind & snow, the sound of bleating baby lambs is always welcome. It is a sure sign that spring is in the air!

Lambing season is an extremely busy time for many crofters in The Hebrides, and for the locals who tend these flocks; it’s a challenging time of year, full of ups and downs, late nights and early mornings. For the rest of us, there is the pleasure of witnessing the lambs' progress throughout the season.
