Celebrating the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris:
As the world gathers to watch the Olympic Games in Paris, we retrieve an object that bring us closer to the sporting practices of the past and the spirit of the games of antiquity, such as a gold stater of king Philip II from Macedonia.
Due to the richness of Mount Pangaion, the minting production of Philip II was immense. Philip II chose the head of Apollo for the obverse of his gold staters, possibly copying the tetradrachms of the Chalkidian League. The reverse depicted Philip’s victorious two-horse chariot at the 348 BC Olympic Games. This particular coin, most likely minted in the Pella mint, belongs to the numismatic collection of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.
Explore the exhibitions on a guided tour and discover the artefacts related to the history and spirit of the Olympic Games!

The oldest souvlaki skewers found seem to be those discovered by archaeologists on Santorini island prehistoric Acrotiri site, dating back as far as 2000 BCE.
There are traces of the popularity of souvlaki on Santorini and Crete through the Bronze Age, and both Theran and Mycenean cultures made use of this method of cooking with lamb or pork grilled meat to be accompanied with bread.
These were the portable lightweight outdoor souvlaki trays made of clay one could travel with. 😋

It's an amazing experience to be able to revisit on my tours the Lefkadia Macedonian Tombs of the Judgment and of the Flowers!
Located amongst Imathia's peach orchards, near Naousa and ancient Mieza, they are two hidden off-the-beaten-track gems in my area of Macedonia with their unique frescoes.

In the early 19th century Mohammed Ali, founder of the final Egyptian dynasty, established an Imaret – a religious, educational and charitable institution – in his hometown of Kavala as the region's Ottoman ruler.
Until 1902, it functioned as an Islamic seminary, since until 1846 the education of Muslims was directly linked to religion.
The word “Imaret” derives from the Arabic word “imara”, which means “construction”. More specifically, it comes from the Arabic root AMR and is comprised of the words ΄amr (life) and isti’mar (the development of a region/place). An Imaret (külliye) is a complex of buildings that is comprised of a market, mosque and other charitable institutions. In Turkish, the kitchens of such an institution, which offered food to the poor, were also considered part of the Imaret. The core idea of the Imaret is life itself and its result is consolidation and growth. As Muslims characteristically say: “The Imaret is the heart of Islam’s growth, around which culture blossoms”.
The Kavala Imaret contains a total of two medreses (seminaries), two dershane-mescit (large domed prayer rooms), a maktab (an elementary school for boys), an Imaret (soup kitchen and home for the poor regardless of religion) and the offices of the management.
From the end of 1922 the spaces of the Imaret were used to house refugees. Later, it was converted into a museum, cafeteria and restaurant. In 2001, the Egyptian state gave it to a private entrepreneur so it could be fully restored and converted into a a luxury hotel named Imaret.

In the heart of my city, Thessaloniki, one of the metro excavations and restoration works is in full progress in one of its underground stations, at Agia Sophia.
Having such a rich history under our feet in the whole city centre, dating from the ancient till the more recent centuries, no wonder why we are still waiting for the metro to arrive!

Nafplion, the former capital city of modern Greece is simply fabulous!
I always enjoy to get back there on my guided tours and explore the old town narrow alleys, with the bougainvilleas blossoming around you. A visit and a few overnights in Nafplion is not to be missed by any traveller to Greece, combined with guided visits to the Palamidi fortress, ancient Epidaurus, Mycenae, the highlights in the Argolis area of Peloponnese 😊🇬🇷

Petralona Cave visit at the renovated most important cave of northern Greece, aka Red Rocks in Halkidiki's Mt. Katsika.
Closed for almost 6 years by the Ministry of Culture the cave now is much more accessible and safe, with new pathways, steps, inox handrails and doors, new WC - including one for disabled visitors - it re-opened to public just 2 months ago.
The nearby museum is also under total renovation and will open its doors next month in June with a new video projection room for visitors.

The oldest bridge in Europe can be found in Greece; named the Arkadiko Bridge, it dates back to Mycenaean times!
The Arkadiko Bridge, also named the Kazarma Bridge, is a Mycenaean construction which can be found in the southern region of mainland Greece, the Peloponnesian peninsula.
The bridge dates back to Greece’s Bronze Age, around 1,300 BC. Originally, it was built to connect the ancient city of Epidaurus with Mycenae and was therefore part of a military road network.
Τhe most interesting feature of the bridge is the way it was constructed. The bridge has remained standing and stable for thousands of years but incredibly does not use any form of binder such as mortar. Not only the weight of the limestone but also how symmetrically the blocks are placed on the vertical axis makes the bridge stable.
This style of construction, which is called Cyclopean masonry, uses massive limestone boulders, roughly fitted together with very little space left between adjacent stones, and no mortar. The boulders typically seem unworked, but some may have been shaped roughly with a hammer and the gaps between boulders filled in with smaller chunks of limestone.
The most famous and well-known works using Cyclopean masonry can be found in the Mycenae and Tiryns sites nearby, where a large percentage of walls in these areas were built using this impressive technique.
The bridge is 22 metres long, 5.6 metres wide, and 4 metres tall.
Although today it is mostly used by pedestrians, its original purpose was quite different. Archaeologists have discovered that, due to the bridge’s style and the specific way it was built, it was originally meant for use by horse-drawn chariots.
The bridge would have been used to transport goods from place to place, but also would have been traversed by Greek troops on their travels across the country.

Thassos, the emerald island of the north Aegean sea, is always in my heart because it was the place where I started my guiding career 35 years ago, working here for two seasons after my graduation from the School of Tourist Guides.
A favourite corner is still the Aliki archaeological site with its twin sanctuaries and its turkoise colour bays.
Not to be missed: Aliki's ancient marble quarries right on the water. Before starting the marble transport by ship, the seafarers came here to pray, and to offer their sacrifices to the gods for protection from the sea dangers. Times and faith changed and the archaic sanctuaries were later complemented by the twin early Christian basilicas.
I also add the last photo of a modern marble quarry on Thassos today to compare it to the ancient one 😉

I had the pleasure to enjoy during Orthodox Easter week on my guided tour delicious traditional fasting dishes in a lunch prepared for us by nuns.
Beansoup, baked aubergines, stuffed tomatoes with rice, potatoe salad, cucumber salad, taramosalata, olives, walnut cake with raisins, red wine 😋
Not only the food and wine were just perfect but being on the foothills of Mt. Olympus, at the modern Osios Ephraim of Syria nunnery is a great experience. Amazingly developed and kept by the hard-working nuns with its great gardens, churches and views.

The altar to the unknown god and the bema.
