The ‘green column bath’ of Budapest – Rudas Thermal baths The beautiful building of Rudas bath made a name in the world of Hollywood movies as well, in 1988 the bath was used as a shooting place for the action movie Red Heat, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Belushi, and in 2012 for some sceneries of the Borgias with Jeremy Irons. Rudas Bath’s Turkish-style bathhouse was built in the 1560s by Sokullu Mustafa, the that time Pasha of Buda. During the 150 years of Turkish reign in Hungary, this was the biggest bath built in Buda. At that time the warm water arrived to the pools from no less, then 21 hot springs. After the that time colour of 8 the pillar sustaining the huge dome above the octagonal central pool, the Turks called the bath Jesil Direkli Ilidzsami, – ”the bath with green columns”. The dome, the big pool, and the stairs leading into the central pool are still the original ones. Once upon a time this pool got light through the still can be seen elephants eyes, dotting the lanterna of the 10 m wide cuppola even today. When you are in a mood for swimming, beside the pools built by Turkish, there’s a large swimming pool underneath a beautiful, two-story, classicist-style building, which is an addition of the 19th century. The swimming pool, operating as a therapeutic swimming facility and with a sauna, was built in 1896. The thermal bath has been visited from 1936 on exclusively by men. All over inside the Rudas, one can feel a light smell of minerals, as the hot spring feeding the bath is rich in calcium, magnesium, hydrogen-carbonate, sulfate and sodium. From the drinking wells located on the hallways you can even taste the healing water of the spring. Rudas bath was almost completely destroyed during WWII. The bath was reconstructed step by step, first in 1952, then 1986, 2006 and 2012. In its drinking hall – reopened in 1965 – the water of the springs Hungária, Attila and Juventus can be consumed for the purposes of a drinking cure.

Matyo people's name can be traced back to King Matthias, who in the 15th century raised Mezőkövesd to the status of royal town. The colorfully embroidered flowers, based on old patterns, with which the women adorn their blouses, fabrics and aprons - red on a white or black ground being particularly popular - produce some of the most beautiful articles in Hungarian folklore.

Living traditional heritage in the cultural space of Kalocsa: Embroidery, ornamental painting, traditional dress and folk dance
The colourful flower motifs of the ornamental painting and embroidery of Kalocsa are known throughout the world and indeed have often been considered an emblematic symbol of Hungarian folk art. This branch of artistic expression has become a unique element of the traditional peasant culture of Kalocsa as well as of the surrounding villages of Drágszél, Homokmégy, Öregcsertő, Szakmár, and Újtelek which were established inthe 18-19th centuries. The ethnic group referred to as Pota inhabiting the area known as Sárköz of Kalocsai in south-central Hungary on the west bank of the Danube is distinct from the surrounding groups in their characteristic dialect, rich folk art and Catholic religion. The women of Kalocsa who still draw, paint and embroiderin the traditional style are the bearers and the perpetuatorsof the local heritage. Traditional revival groups, folk dance groups, the local museum and folk art centre all contribute to the safeguarding of the characteristic culture and folk art that distinguishes Kalocsa identity. The inhabitants of Kalocsa and the surrounding settlements are devoted to their folk heritage. They create numerous opportunities for the presentation of their traditional dances and attire: Midsummer Eve Festivities, Danube Folklore Festival, Kalocsa Paprika Festival, village feasts, and harvest celebrations. These events attract people of all ages and provide an excellent opportunity for the transmission of cultural heritage from generation to generation. The role of awareness raising and art education is also of paramount importance in the safeguarding and sustaining of the local heritage.

Zsolnay, or formally Zsolnay Porcelánmanufaktúra Zrt is a Hungarian manufacturer of porcelain, tiles, and stoneware. The company introduced the eosin glazing process and pyrogranite ceramics. Their foortiles can be seen everywhere in Budapest on Matthias Churhc, and more. The Zsolnay factory was established by Miklós Zsolnay (1800–1880) in Pécs, Hungary, to produce stoneware and other ceramics in 1853. In 1863, his son, Vilmos Zsolnay (1828–1900) joined the company and became its manager and director after several years. He led the factory to worldwide recognition by demonstrating its innovative products at world fairs and international exhibitions, including the 1873 World Fair in Vienna, then at the 1878 World Fair in Paris, where Zsolnay received a Grand Prix. In 1893, Zsolnay introduced porcelain pieces made of eosin. Zsolnay is active factory even now.

The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Gyertyaszentelő Boldogasszony) in the city centre of Pécs is an unequalled Ottoman monument of our country, the most important example of Turkish-Islamic architecture in Hungary. A pleasant, greenish-yellow light illuminates the church’s interior through the hive patterned, arched windows. You can admire the finely decorated mihrab (praying niche), which faces Mecca and you can also discover some calligraphic lines from the Koran scattered on the walls. Right next to the vestry, there are two vessels that had previously been used in the bath of Pasha Gazi Kassim and now serve as containers for holy water. Visitors can wander around this enchanting building where the East meets the West, this sacred place where different religions interact, by using modern equipment, exciting interactive elements and animations. Thus, in the church that is considered to be the symbol of Pécs, we can get acquainted with the history of the edifice and its changing appearance throughout the past.

A museum post office offering traditional and modern postal services opened on Wednesday in Hollókő in an environment worthy of the World Heritage site, offering a glimpse into the 157-year history of Magyar Posta (Hungarian Post).

The new building has the atmosphere of a small 19th century post office, with museum measuring instruments, a post office warehouse from a hundred years ago, a rest garden, a telephone exchange, and postal scenes from the radio cabaret, which can be heard on the telephone set.

Barnabás Balczó, President and CEO of Magyar Posta, stressed at the opening ceremony that Hollókő is not an open-air museum, but a living settlement, and they want the museum post office to be a living service center, offering traditional and modern services to both locals and visitors in a way that is in keeping with the World Heritage environment.

Nádasdy Castle of Sárvár

Chief Justice Ferenc Nádasdy built the castle in its present form. The main hall’s monumental mural is an important work of Hungarian baroque painting. Nádasdy Castle is an imposing feat of design, with its distinctive pentagonal shape and a dry moat surrounding its walls. Through the Nádasdy family, the castle of Sárvár, now called Nádasdy Castle, played a significant role in the progress of Hungarian culture in the 16th and 17th centuries. The first Hungarian book, The New Testament of 1541, was printed here. Moreover, the castle is at the centre of some truly shocking tales. As well as being the rumoured setting of Erzsebet Báthory’s violent crimes.
