India undertakes a massive 75-day campaign to clean up 75 beaches.

Synopsis
The 75 days 75 beaches mega cleanliness campaign named Swachch Sagar, Suraksh*t Sagar aims to educate people regarding reducing marine litter and minimizing the use of plastics. The drive will take place all across the country’s entire coastline. It is part of the 'Azadi ka Amrit Mohatsav' which marks the 75 years of Independence.

India has commenced a 75-day-long cleanliness campaign named Swachch Sagar, Suraksh*t Sagar which aims to clean up 75 beaches all across the country’s coastline. As per the centre, this mega clean-up drive is a huge celebration which is a part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mohatsav marking the epic 75 years of Independence. The campaign includes 75 volunteers, who have been allocated to clean the beaches at every km of the 7500 km long Indian coastline.

As per reports, last month at the UN ocean conference in Lisbon, Portugal, India committed to protecting 30% of its oceans, waters, and lands by 2030 in a phased manner. After the conference, India announced that it will conduct a cleanliness awareness campaign along India's huge coastline as part of the mission.

The significance of this clean-up drive is to spread awareness regarding the intense littering of plastics in the ocean waters, which has become a threat to marine life. Several studies have suggested that the use of plastics forms over 50% of ocean litter which harms marine biodiversity, human health, and the economy. Especially during the monsoon season, India witnessed an enormous amount of microplastics along the coastline.

This mission was launched in association with the Indian Coast Guard, Environment Ministry, National Disaster Management Authority, Akhil Vidyarth Parishad, Students for development, and various other organizations. According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, this campaign will bring a mass behavioral change among the people which in turn will contribute to huge environmental conservation. The Ministry also suggested three main goals of the drive that are to consume judiciously, dispose carefully, and segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste at home.

This massive step is also part of India’s fight against plastic as Prime Minister Narendra Modi calls to completely restrict the use of plastics in a phased mission. In regard to that on 1 st July 2022, India banned the use, manufacture, or distribution of plastics across the country.

The huge beach cleaning campaign began its operation on 3 rd July, 2022, and will complete its goal on 17th September, which is celebrated as the International Coastal Clean-up Day and coincidently is PM Narendra Modi’s birthday.

Arunachal Pradesh's first-ever airport to start operations from August 15

Come August 15, Arunachal Pradesh's first-ever airport Hollongi Airport will start operations, thus ending the state's long wait to have its own airport.

Come August 15, Arunachal Pradesh’s first-ever airport – Hollongi Airport – will start operations, thus ending the state’s long wait to have its own airport. The Hollongi Airport is a greenfield airport, located just 15 km from the state capital, Itanagar.
This is great news not just for the state but also for the rest of the country as up until now, traveling to Arunachal Pradesh meant a long travel time, several detours and different modes of transport.

At present, the nearest airport for Arunachal is the Lilabari Airport in the North Lakhimpur district in Assam. Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam, is the closest international airport from Itanagar. With Hollongi Airport to start operations soon, travellers will no longer have to take either an overnight bus to and from the capital or fly from North Lakhimpur, which is approximately 80 km from Itanagar.
The Hollongi Airport is all set to get commissioned on August 15, after which it will be available for passengers. The energy-efficient greenfield airport comes with all modern amenities for passengers and it will be able to accommodate 200 passengers during peak hours. The airport will have eight check-in counters in total. The 2,300m runway will also be suitable for take-off and landing of Boeing 747 aircraft.

When it comes to tourism in the state, the new airport is expected to bring in a whole lot of visitors. Though Arunachal Pradesh is already a popular destination, especially among adventure and wildlife enthusiasts, it is true that many tourists think twice before making plans to explore Arunachal due to the lack of air connectivity. With the state’s new airport, all that can be put to rest, and travelers can reach their destinations in a much shorter time and without the hassle of taking detours.

Ladakh working towards a sustainable future by building roads using plastic waste.

The administration of Ladakh has taken up the responsibility of developing roads with everyday increasing plastic waste. The aim is to protect the environment, reduce the carbon.

As difficult as it may sound, the task of building a sustainable future undertaken by the Ladakh government is truly commendable. The administration of Ladakh has taken up the responsibility of developing roads with everyday increasing plastic waste. The aim is to protect the environment, reduce the carbon footprints and preserve ecology in the Himalayas.

As per Ladakh admin, some 10 percent of roads in the region will be constructed using plastic. To make this task possible, the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) also organised a training session for local engineers.

A training program on use of waste plastic in road construction, along with other things was held in Kargil on July 11. It was aimed at teaching the engineers about improvements in the road construction activities in the cold climatic conditions. The programme was organised by the Rural Development Department of Ladakh in collaboration with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI).

The administration has already said yes to the legal framework to enable the use of plastic waste in construction of roads. The Administrative Secretary of the PWD Department of Ladakh has passed an order in this regard making mandatory usage of practice waste in road construction.

The order reads, “In order to find sustainable solution to the problem of plastic waste in Ladakh, all the bituminous roads in Ladakh shall contain at least 10% of plastic waste including plastic bottles, containers etc.”

This is a huge mission to make the Himalayan state carbon-neutral and make it an eco-friendly destination.

Varanasi to be first ‘Cultural and Tourism Capital’ of SCO

The holy city of Varanasi showcasing India’s culture and traditions over the ages will be declared the first “Cultural and Tourism Capital” of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, Secretary General of the bloc Zhang Ming said.

The Beijing-headquartered Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is an eight-member economic and security alliance comprising China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan. Zhang said Varanasi will become the “Cultural and Tourism Capital” of the SCO for 2022-23 under a new rotating initiative by the eight-member organisation to promote people-to-people contacts and tourism among the member states.

“We are about to implement a rotating mechanism. We will rotate the title of Cultural and Tourism Capital among the member states,” he said, adding that Varanasi, India’s ancient city, will be the first to be granted the title.

Under this initiative, each year a city of the cultural heritage of a member country that will take over the rotating Presidency of the organisation will get the title to highlight its prominence, Zhang told the media here.

He highlighted the organisation’s new initiatives ahead of this year’s Heads of the State summit of the SCO scheduled to be held at Samarkand in Uzbekistan on September 15-16 this year. The new initiative will come into force after the Samarkand summit following which India will take over the Presidency and host the next Heads of the State summit. India hosted the Head of the Government of the SCO meet in 2020.
