The big and the powerful Osprey (Sc. Name: Pandion haliaetus) returns with a catch of fish. Watching and photographing this migratory raptor on the sand bars of Bhagirathi has become a winter ritual for us.

With a diet consisting entirely of fish, this bird consumes way more fish than an average Bengali guy. Any other raptor of this size (even the fish-eagles) will never dare to plunge straight into the water in pursuit of a fish. Getting airborne from the water with feathers dripping wet and with a gigantic fish dangling from the talons, is an impossible feat which only the mighty Osprey can pull off.
