Rautakhet

Rautakhet Homestay in Kumaon
[email protected] Located in the midst of Peach Orchards and facing a Reserve Forest, our open-plan house is split into two levels.
(7)

Rautakhet is a family-owned Private Home, recently made available to paying guests seeking a quiet time in the Kumaon hills. There's a double bed in the upper level and a single bed and a mattress in the lower level. Ideal for a couple and two kids. We depend entirely on filtered rain harvested water, and encourage guests to use this precious resource judiciously. For cooking and drinking we filte

r water from the village tap. The electricity supply can be erratic at times, but we have two solar lanterns to take care of outages in the evenings. At 6500 feet one doesn't really need a fan but we have one nonetheless. The bathroom is large with a geyser and clean towels. We have a gas cylinder as well as an induction cooker, and prefer to use the induction cooker unless there is an unusually long power cut. There's also an electric kettle, a sandwich toaster and a microwave oven that works well only till lunch time when the voltage is stable. The kitchen larder is well stocked with basic provisions and condiments which you are free to use, but if you don't feel like cooking, Chandan Singh our caretaker can arrange for home-cooked vegetarian 'pahari' food for Rs.200 per person per meal. You will have to inform him in advance of course. He can also arrange for home-made Paranthas in the morning and Pakodas in the evening. One can find very basic groceries [potatoes, onions, eggs, maggi noodles, cold drinks, wafers] in Bhallar. Bread, milk, butter, fresh vegetables and chicken are available in Nathuwakhan [3km walking and 5km by road]. Chandan Singh will be more than happy to buy them for you in advance. The nearest Booze shop is 13 kilometres away in Talla Ramgarh and the alcohol available is pretty basic. We suggest you carry your booze with you. We have old-fashioned pine wood floors so guests are encouraged not to smoke inside the house. There's an MP3 player and a TV [rarely used] with a Tata Sky Connection that can be reactivated if you so please. There's excellent mobile phone connectivity in Rautakhet and Tata Photon/Reliance internet dongles work well inside the house.

The nearest Railway Station is Kathgodam which is well connected with trains from Delhi, Lucknow and Kolkata. From Kathgodam it's a 3 hour/67 kilometres drive to Rautakhet via Bhimtal, Bhowali, Ramgarh and Nathuwakhan. Maruti vans and altos charge Rs 1,500 for a oneway trip. We can arrange a reliable taxi driver if you want. The other option is to drive. From Delhi the best route is via Ghaziabad to Hapur Bypass and then on to the Moradabad Bypass. Just before Rampur turn left to take the road to Suar. Carry on straight to the Bazpur Doraha, and turn right towards Kaladhungi. There's 6 kilometres of bad road between Bazpur Doraha and Bazpur, but the road from there to Kaladhungi and on to the twin towns of Haldwani and Kathgodam are good.
