This talk will focus on the many turning points in the journey of our practice. Each project is ultimately a series of value based decisions wherein the brief given by the client was transformed to fulfil a larger agenda. These decisions, their outcome as architecture, and the growth of the practice over 33 years will be the substance of the talk.

Shimul Javeri Kadri is the founder of and partner at SJK Architects along with Vaishali Mangalvedhekar, Sarika Shetty and Roshni Kshirsagar. Founded in 1990, SJK Architects is a Mumbai-based collective of 30+ built environment professionals, working with clients and collaborators all across the country.

Shimul’s need for clarity drives her approach to design. Research, analysis and multiple approaches that can resolve a client’s aspirations (which she defines as the patron and society at large) are the starting point. She studied urban planning in order to help her understand the dismal state of housing in Mumbai. This proved to be an exploration of the global politics of race, class and gender. Her focus on an equitable society still informs her work and choices, as is evident in her affiliation to causes related to education and women.

In 2014, for her contribution to architecture, Shimul was one of three finalists and received a special mention at the prestigious ArcVision Prize - Women and Architecture (Italy), also referred to the “Pritzker for women”

As a designer it is important to take a step into the unknown, A step which reflects the important issues of the project at an abstract level, without getting entangled with the nitty- gritty. Through the process of superimposing other issues like Site, Climate, Resources, Functionality, Time, art craft etc, the diagram slowly comes to reality. The sequence in which you superimpose, governs the final built form. I would be showing examples of this process in my students’ and my own work.

Talk would also focus on the engineered wood and structure, which is my prime interest at this stage of my life as the whole world is moving towards this direction to reduce the carbon footprint.

I have retired twice from architecture teaching, once from Australia after nineteen years, which rewarded me with a lifetime teaching award from the Australian Institute of Architects, and secondly from the dean’s position from Navrachana University Vadodara, after nine years of starting and running the architecture department. At present I am director in an established Architecture practice ‘Aakar Design Consultants PVT. LTD., focusing on campus scale projects and timber technology. My involvement in education field at present is more as a juror in design studio and as mentor for research.

Dr Patel’s talk is about three projects, namely the New Building for the Parliament of India, the Amochhu Master Planning Project, and the Kartavya Path Redevelopment Project. It will
focus on tackling site problems and taking a solution-oriented approach for designing both
architecture and urban-scale projects.

Dr Bimal Patel is an architect, urbanist and academic who has traversed disciplinary,
professional, and institutional boundaries to explore the ways in which architecture, urban design and urban planning can enrich the lives of people in India’s cities. He heads HCP as its Chairman and Managing Director. He headed CEPT University as President from 2012 to 2024.

Patel received a Diploma in Architecture from CEPT, Ahmedabad, in 1984. He received a dual Master’s in Architecture and City Planning in 1988, and a PhD in City and Regional Planning in 1995 from the University of California, Berkeley. In 1996, he founded Environmental Planning Collaborative (EPC), a not-for-profit consultancy and policy research and advocacy organisation.

Patel and his projects have been conferred with numerous awards including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (1992), the Prime Minister’s National Award for Excellence in Urban Planning and Design (2003), and the Padma Shri (2019).
