A dung beetle rolling a ball of dung on Ol Pejeta.

Dung beetles are exceptionally strong and have been known to push balls of dung up to 50 times their body weight!

Another interesting fact about dung beetles is that they are the only known non-human animal to navigate and orient themselves using the Milky Way.

The grey crowned crane, famed for its beauty, is one of only two crane species that can roost in trees. This is due to their prehensile hind toe which allows them to grasp tree branches.

RΓΌppell's vultures are the highest flying birds on earth, known for reaching heights of up to 37,000 feet above sea level. Ruppell’s vultures have a specialised variant of the protein haemoglobin which allows them to absorb and utilise oxygen efficiently in the upper atmosphere, hence their high flying altitude.

The population of Ruppell's vultures has been declining rapidly due to poisoning, hunting for trade, and habitat loss and they are now considered as endangered. On Ol Pejeta, these vultures can frequently be spotted perched on acacia trees on the banks of the River Ewaso Ng’iro.

A male red headed weaver hard at work building a nest. In an attempt to attract a mate, male red headed weavers usually compete to build the prettiest nest. If a female approves of the construction, she will move into the nest and start furnishing its interior with bark, grass and feathers.

Famed for its beautiful plumage, the lilac breasted roller gets its name from their circular motion during courtship. When courting, rollers will stoop fast from a high perch and engage in twisting and looping motions in the air with a potential mate accompanied by loud raucous calls, hence the name.
Rollers love building nests in dry wooden logs and on Ol Pejeta they are mostly found within the marsh area of the Conservancy which has a lot of trees and woody shrubs ideal for their habitat.
