The role of government is to position Sri Lanka and ensure correct messaging that Sri Lanka is safe and welcoming traveler’s to our stunning island. The international media needs to be partnered, to build credibility and to ensure positive messaging; instead of local media shows in parliament and visiting the Port and Airport to welcome travellers!! This reflects poorly on the country. These arrival numbers include travellers on cruise ships on short stay.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority says it expects to attract around 800,000 tourists in 2022, with an estimated revenue of USD 800 million.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe engaged in discussions with stakeholders of the tourism sector today (14) at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The Prime Minister instructed officials to prepare a plan to attract tourists from India for the next six months.

The Premier also requested relevant authorities to make arrangements for the resumption of operations of the Palaly Airport.

With Sri Lanka targeting around 2.5 million tourists by 2025 with an expected revenue of USD 3.5 billion, the Prime Minister urged all stakeholders to formulate long-term plans to attract around 1.5 million high-level tourists.

The Prime Minister also instructed relevant stakeholders to engage youth in awareness programmes as many employees in the hospitality sector have abandoned the profession and enrolments at hotel schools has also dropped drastically.

The Prime Minister also discussed the possibilities of organizing cultural festivals that will provide opportunities to create new employment opportunities and allow tourists to immerse themselves in the local culture.

Premier Wickremesinghe urged the public sector tourism officials to work towards improving the Galle Literary Festival to attract more authors and literary lovers from around the world.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism Harin Fernando said he already held discussions with the diplomatic community to urge countries to lift the existing travel restrictions to Sri Lanka.

The Minister said promotional shows with local and international celebrities are planned to attract foreign tourists with focus on Indian tourists.
