ABOUT COUNSELING PROGRAMME FOR YOUNG GIRLS Women are very delicate and complex beings. Their biological and psychological make-up as human beings attests to this fact. Women are also communicative in nature. In other words they function better through clear communicative channels person to person conversations. Their need for self expression makes it mandatory for them to communicate their needs through verbal mediums of interactions. As girls, complexities come to the fore when they enter their adolescent years; where they begin to develop physical body changes like breasts, p***c hair and experience menstruation. For most of them these body changes are very confusing. While they are aware that it marks an entrance into a new phase of life as women, they also are ignorant of certain basic conditions that apply to their conduct in this phase. Hygiene and behavioural patterns are expected to change. For instance some girls do not know what to do when their first menstual flow begins and they do not know how to deal with their own emotional rythyms that arise from hormonal changes. Questions like bathing, use of deodorants and proper disposal of pads or menstrual materials are not easily answered for those of them who are raised by unreliable and non –communicative parents and wards. For others they have a problem coming to terms with the enlargement of their breasts as they walk through puberty. Infact they glance around and expect the same body pattern of growth with other girls. They think their breasts should be small if other girls have small breasts or their hips should be as wide or narrow as that of their peers. If their breast sizes are on the large size they want to hide it under layers of heavy clothing, if they are small sized they start thinking of ways to make them seem larger. This thought pattern creates conflicts within them and ultimately leads to poor self esteem. These problems are further heightened for girls raised in abusive backgrounds that cultivate r**e incidences, abortion and disease. If a girl is infected with a sexually transmitted disease, she may not be able to get treatment because she cannot open up to confide in anyone and as such she may not have access to medical services. In some occassions these girls simply cannot afford treatment even when they have information about where to get help and for fear of being labeled promiscuous they cannot ask their parents and guardians for money. Information channels that deal with these issues are low in our various communities and counselling centres are virtually non existent. It is in the light of this vacum that Sisters interact seeks to address these prevalent issues through it’s counselling and mentoring programme for Teenage girls in secondary schools. Sisters Interact will provide information on hygiene and general behaviour to girls who need enlightenment in their everyday living conditions.
