The temperate Himalayan forests of western Nepal are home to a close relative of the beloved giant pandas, the red panda. These tiny herbivores have a distinct reddish-brown fur and a bushy raccoon-like tail. Over the past two decades, human interference including poaching, habitat loss and degradation has seen red panda populations drop by almost 50% around the world. As a consequence, these adorable creatures are listed in the IUCN Red List as endangered since 2008. While conservation activities are still in order, you can still catch sight of these beautiful animals on the westernmost borders of Rara National Park in western Nepal.

Danphe (Himalayan Monal)
The magnificent Danphe, or the Himalayan Monal, is the national bird of Nepal. The adult male Danphe is significantly conspicuous in its striking multi-colored plumage, and its long, metallic-green crest with changeable reddish copper feathers on the back and sides of its neck. The female pheasants are comparatively less flamboyant in color but still as attractive with their mottled brownish-black feathers. If you're planning to visit Nepal, be sure to carry your cameras along because you never know when you could catch a glimpse of this exotic bird of the Himalayas.
