Lhochhar or Losar is one of the most popular festival in Nepal. The festival is celebrated by the Tamang, Gurung, Sherpa ethinic groups in Nepal. Lhochhar is the main festival in these community. Lhochhar is a combination of two words; Lho - year and Chhar - new so literally Lhochhar is New Year for these community.

Tamang community celebrates Sonam Lhochhar whereas Gurung celebrate Tamu Lhocchar and Sherpas celebrate Gyalpo Lhochhar. Even though the terms may diffet from each others, they are all the festival marking the New Year following Lunar Calendar.

Today, it is the day of Sonam Lhocchar and the Tamang Community are celebrating 2858th Sonam Lhochhar with new enthusiasm. This year it is the year of Tiger(Tak Lho). There are 12 animals for 12 months according to Lunar Calendar followed by Tamang community. The new born babirs born from today till the next year on this day are given the horoscope Tiger(Tak Lho). This is how our age is counted and in this past people didn't know the year of your birth but they used count by the horoscope given to them.

The attraction of this festival is its traditional foods such as Khapse(traditional breads made in oil, Selroti, Airak(alcohol made of maize or millet) etc. People get up early morning and cleaning the houses and the surroundings, they start some puja(prayers) and go to the monasteries with some offerings. They meditate and perform some rituals for the welfare of all beings and good health of the family in the presence of Lamas(monks). After such rituals and prayers, the offerings brought to the monasteries are shared as benediction and they start to enjoy in traditional music. Playing Damphu, tamang musical instrument of Tamang community, they start to sing tamang songs. The ethnic attires they wear are another attraction. Tamang Bakhu, Lungi, Topi and the jwelleries when put on by Tamang chelis(girls/maids), they look very beautiful.
