Money Mentalist Lynda Moore - Money Mentor and Author
Conversations With Money - A Love Story I’m Lynda, the Money Mentalist. I started my career as an accountant when I was 17.
(7)

I love numbers, to me they tell a story of your business and your life. I read them like others read novels. I graduated from University with a B.Com. After working for several accounting firms, when I was 7 months pregnant with my daughter (now nearly 33), I began my own practice. I remained in Public Practice until 2010 when I sold my business to return to university to study Psychology. In the

middle of all of this, my marriage ended. Anecdotally, 70-80% of relationships break up because of money and this was true in my situation. I was devastated, and an emotional wreck. Even though I was an accountant, which meant I had a sound knowledge of my own financial situation, that didn’t really help me going through my own breakup. Emotions completely took over. I felt I was completely on my own. I came out the other side servicing $600,000 of debt. It may seem a strange change in career path from accounting to Psychology, but it made complete sense to me. What I had realised in my years in practice, is that accounting (and money) isn’t just about the numbers, it is also about the emotions that go behind the numbers, it’s how we see the world and how we make decisions all stem from our relationship with money. I graduated again this time with a Post Graduate Diploma in Arts (Psych). I continued to specialise in Money Psychology by continuing my training with Professor David Krueger (author of the Book ‘The Secret Language of Money’) and became a certified Money Mentor Coach. What Changed?
• I learned the distinction between a budget and a money plan.
• I started saying No to myself and others about things that didn’t really matter to me. And saying Yes to what was important to me. This was when I really saw the impact of mindset on moving the numbers.
• I learned how to make the tough decisions that helped me turn my life around.
• I rewrote my own Money Story. The Money Mentalist was born, and I now spend my time working with individuals and couples helping them understand their relationship with money, how to communicate about money to each other and how to make better financial choices. I use my accounting expertise to help them build a Money Plan (I don’t use the term budget) which gives them the confidence to manage their money to reach their financial goals. Small business owners work hard for their money and it often comes at a cost:

– Families can be neglected

– Relationships can struggle

– All that hard work doesn’t equal a life of freedom

I’ve been working as an accountant since I was 17. But, I quickly realised that the numbers in a business are deeply tied to the relationship owners have with money.

If that relationship is healthy the business and the owner thrive.

If it’s not, everything dives.

An ‘investment’ with a big non-monetary payoff but an ongoing financial cost

Adding a pet to your family is a joyful experience, but it's also a significant financial commitment that often goes overlooked. From the initial cost of adoption or purchase to ongoing expenses like food, veterinary care, and training, owning a pet can add up quickly.

As I welcomed Jett, my not-so-little black lab, into my life, I found myself reassessing my budget to ensure I could provide for him without strain.

Pets are more than just animals; they offer companionship, mental health benefits, and social connections.

However, in times of financial stress, many families face the heart-wrenching decision of whether they can afford to keep their beloved pets.

By considering the long-term financial implications and even donating pet supplies to food banks, we can help ensure that these valuable members of our families remain with us, offering their unconditional love and support.

I am unashamedly a dog person. Sorry cat people, I’m sure you will still relate to what I’m talking about. One thing I was really looking forward to as part of my relocation to the South Island was having a dog again. I had very good intentions of finding a rescue dog, and giving it…

Fancy a financial date night?

While it may sound odd at first, financial date nights are crucial for fostering healthy money conversations and reducing stress in relationships.

Setting aside dedicated time to discuss finances can prevent spontaneous, often heated arguments and instead promote open, non-judgmental dialogue.

If the concept feels daunting, start with a simple kitchen table check-in.

Remember, the goal is to listen, brainstorm solutions, and plan together, transforming money talk into a constructive and bonding experience.

What the heck is she on about now?! Why on earth do we need to have a financial date night? These are some of the reactions I get when I suggest couples get together to specifically talk about money. Are they important? Yes. Are they easy? Not to start with, particularly if you are feeling…

Struggling with self-doubt and feeling like a fraud despite your achievements?

You're not alone—imposter syndrome is a common experience for many, regardless of gender. From feeling unqualified to fearing exposure, these nagging thoughts can significantly impact your career and financial well-being.

But recognizing these feelings is the first step to overcoming them. By understanding the five imposter personality types, you can begin to tackle these feelings head-on.

Practical steps like talking about your feelings, celebrating your achievements, challenging negative thoughts, evaluating your environment, acknowledging your weaknesses, and seeking a coach or mentor can help you regain confidence and claim your worth.

Remember, everyone feels like an imposter sometimes. Embrace your journey, and don't let imposter syndrome hold you back from your potential.

If I had a $1.00 for every time I have heard the “I can’t do that”, “I don’t have enough experience/qualifications, to take on that role”. “Clients won’t pay that much an hour for my services”, I would have a lot more money in the bank than I do! If you hear yourself saying things....

Navigating the Crossroads of Relationship Decisions

Neil Sedaka's tune about breaking up got me reflecting on the real challenges of ending long-term relationships. It's not just the breakup conversation that's tough—it's the agonizing "Will I or Won't I?" phase and the aftermath that truly test us.

In a chat with Kimberlee Sweeney from the Divorce and Separation Coaching Institute NZ, we discussed the impact of this decision on our emotional and financial well-being. Drawing from personal experiences and Gottman Institute research, we explore how to navigate this critical time—whether you're contemplating separation or aiming to rekindle the connection.

This article offers insights and guidance on the emotional and practical steps to help you make informed decisions for a better future.

“They say that breaking up is hard to do, now, I know, I know that its true. Don’t say that this is the end, instead of breaking up I wish that we were making up again” sang Neil Sedaka on my Spotify play list (where on earth did they pull this up from!), as I…

Are you a small business owner feeling overwhelmed by the numbers?

It's time to align your business goals with your personal dreams. Too often, accountants focus solely on the financials, neglecting what you truly want from your business from a lifestyle perspective. This approach can lead to burnout, strained relationships, and a business that takes more than it gives.

Remember why you started: to achieve financial freedom and build a life you love.

Let’s create a business that serves you, not the other way around.

I am guessing like mine, your feed is full of stories about the housing market. I am following with interest as I have recently moved myself, and Mum is in the middle of all of this as she is selling her house.

In one of the articles I read, there was a comment from a real estate agent about the length of time it is taking to sell properties and how important it is to ‘manage expectations’ of vendors.

That phrase certainly piqued my interest. I have another term for ‘managing expectations’, it’s one of my favourite Money Biases, Anchoring.

Lynda Moore shows how anchoring money bias can twist our assessment of value. It is a problem for everyone, professionals included. Anchors need challenging & resetting based on proper relevant comparatives

Staying Warm and Cozy on a Wet Winter Matariki Day Without Breaking the Bank

Matariki, the Māori New Year, is a time for reflection, celebration, and togetherness. It highlights our connection to our ancestors and the natural world, reminding us of the resilience, wisdom, and guiding principles that have sustained us for generations. This celebration is not just about marking the new year but also about honoring our heritage and the bonds with our ancestors and the environment. As we gather for Matariki, we reflect on the past year, set intentions for the year ahead, and appreciate the natural world that supports us.

Despite the chilly and damp weather, keeping warm and cozy on a wet winter Matariki day doesn't have to be expensive. By embracing the principles of Matariki, we can find simple, budget-friendly ways to stay warm and comfortable during this special time.

Here are some tips and tricks to stay toasty without splurging.

1. Layer Up Smartly One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to stay warm is to layer your clothing. Dig into your closet; you might find forgotten gems that will help you layer up effectively.

2. Embrace Warm Drinks Hot beverages like tea, coffee, and hot chocolate are comforting and help keep you warm from the inside out. Make a big pot and keep it on hand throughout the day. Add a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg to your drinks for an extra cosy touch.

3. Cozy Up with Blankets Nothing says cosy like snuggling under a warm blanket. Layer a few blankets on your couch or bed for added warmth. If you have an electric blanket, use it to pre-warm your bed before you snuggle in, but remember to turn it off when you’re ready to sleep to save on electricity.

4. DIY Heat Packs Make your heat packs using items you likely have at home. Fill a clean sock with uncooked rice, tie the end, and microwave it for a couple of minutes. These homemade heat packs can be reused and are perfect for warming up cold feet or soothing achy muscles.

5. Cook Up a Storm Winter is the perfect time to indulge in hearty, warming meals. Cook soups, stews, and casseroles in your oven or stovetop to heat your home while providing delicious comfort food. Bonus: the steam from cooking can also add a bit of humidity to your home, making it feel warmer.

6. Get Moving Physical activity is a great way to generate body heat. Do a quick workout, dance around your living room, or clean the house. Not only will you warm up, but you’ll also feel more energized and productive.

7. Share the Warmth Gather everyone in one room if you’re celebrating Matariki with family or friends. The more people in a space, the warmer it will be. Plus, the company of loved ones can make even the coldest days feel a bit warmer.

By incorporating these simple and budget-friendly tips, you can stay warm and cosy on a wet winter Matariki day without breaking the bank. So, wrap yourself up, enjoy the festivities, and embrace the warmth of this special time of year.

Hopefully, we will get a clear night to go outside and view Matariki.

Happy Matariki everyone!

Financial fulfilment means different things to different people. But, whatever it means to you, a really good starting point is to apply the principles from George S. Clason’s book, The Richest Man in Babylon.

The book may have been written before computers and technology took over our lives (first released 1926), but the concepts still hold true today.
