Looking for something to do tonight? The forecast is for clear skies and we have spaces available on our 8pm tour. Now is a great time to view Saturn through the telescopes as it nears opposition and we will also have the moon scope out.
Bookings can be made at http://omakaobservatory.co.nz/
We are running a special tour tnight and have six seats left. Pick up will be at 8pm from the railway station http://omakaobservatory.co.nz/
The moon reaches first quarter tonight and will look incredible through the telescopes with high contrast shadows.
Also keep an eye out to the south at 6:30pm for a low but bright International Space Station pass. Then from 7:08pm the latest Starlink satellites will appear low in the southwest continuing very low in the western sky through to the northwest.
Omaka Observatory Xmas Float 2022
Short video of our Xmas Parade Float from last weekend. Special thanks to Paul and Cath and all the assistance from our volunteers. Well done on winning best Community Float. Think Paul is already planning next years entry....
How lucky were we! Tonight the ISS went right by Jupitet
Comet C/2017 K2 (PanSTARRS) made its closest approach to Earth on 14th July and we have been observing it through the occasional gaps in the clouds recently. It will likely reach its brightest on 4th August. As it is expected to reach a magnitude of 8.7, you will need binoculars or a telescope to view it (human eye can see up to about magnitude 6.5). The coma (sphere of gas) surrounding it is estimated to be 129,874km in diameter, that’s 10x the diameter of the Earth. While this is large, the nucleus itself is relatively small, estimated to be about 18km.
Here are a series of images captured on our Unistellar eVscope which was donated by Marlborough Lines. This eVscope is featured in our astrotours as well as used in citizen science and educational outreach programs.
