Waitomo is gearing up to celebrate Matariki with 'Matariki ki Waitomo', a week-long festival featuring an underground concert, workshops, art exhibitions and twilight tours to be held in the Waitomo Caves area from July 3-10.

Centered around the theme of rebirth, the festival hopes to provide a unique way for visitors to learn and experience the Matariki story through a series of paid and free events.

The pīwakawaka, commonly known as the fantail, is a familiar sight in gardens across our country. A cheerful little creature that flutters about shyly, it’s known for its beautiful tail feathers that fan out, and its friendly ‘cheet cheet’ call.

They seem to always be on the move, catching their prey on the wing. Pīwakawaka are often described as friendly because it seems to follow us as we walk. Rather than wanting your company, they are actually taking advantage of the insect life we disturb as we walk.

We were lucky enough to get a glimpse into Grant Aldridge’s trip - the winner of Dementia Canterbury’s Brain Awareness Month competition where Ezibed.com donated a $1,000 accommodation package! Wow… what an amazing trip he had…

“Thanks Ezibed.com and Dementia Canterbury for our wonderful 3 night break in Wanaka. The accommodation at Oakridge Resort, Wanaka NZ was warm and sunny with a great view of the mountains from our apartment. We managed to fit in a little sightseeing (up to Diamond Lake, Lake Wanaka Lookout, Glendhu Bay, , Luggate and the Cardrona Hotel), as well as a leisurely wander round the township and waterfront, while also finding time to relax and chill-out. Some great meals were enjoyed too - daily cooked breakfasts at Oakridge, and dinners at Francesca's Italian Kitchen, Trout and Fudog (the Mongolian Beef was delicious!) Plus everyone was so friendly! Really appreciate this opportunity to get away for a few days, recharge the batteries before winter and ! So thank you again!!”
