Meet Tram Driver Ross!

Ross joined the team back in 2019 as a casual role in retirement, and feels very privileged to be associated with our magnificent historic trams: his favourites to drive are Tram 1888 and Tram 11 (the youngest and oldest in the fleet respectively), and he loves the camaraderie among the team.

Outside of work he’s a big rugby fan, and often ribs our guests from across the Tasman and north of Cook Strait about their local teams! 🏉

His top tips for customers are to try to hop on board every tramcar in service the day they are visiting, and to explore the fantastic buildings and businesses in Te Matatiki Ora The Arts Centre as well as Quake City.

Say hi to Ross on your next visit! 🚋

Happy birthday to Tram 178 - the tramcar is turning 102 years old!

The tram was one of 25 tramcars of this type and was built right here in Christchurch by Boon & Co. It was also the first electric tram to be restored at Ferrymead Heritage Park in 1970, and has been part of our Christchurch Tram fleet since our circuit opened in 1995!

Happy birthday to Tram 1888 🎉 The youngest in our fleet, the tram is turning 90 years old today!

Tram 1888 was originally R 1808 and began service in Sydney, Australia on 17 April 1934 after being built in New South Wales. The tram's original depot was Fort Macquarie, now the site of the Sydney Opera House! 🚋

Happy birthday to Tram 244! The tramcar started service in Melbourne on 23 February 1925, making it 99 years old today 🎉

Built in Melbourne, the tramcar was removed from service in 1983 and started operating on our Christchurch Tramway circuit in 1996 after arriving from Australia 🚋 You'll see it has sported a few different liveries over its years of operation!

Introducing our newest tramcar, Tram 24!

Tram 24 is an original Christchurch Tram built here in the city by Boon & Co in 1920 and was designed to travel up Cashmere Hill along the Papanui - Cashmere line. It was decommissioned in 1954 and used as a farm shed until 1968. Restoration began in 2011 by the Heritage Tramways Trust before being completed just before Christmas this year, with the tram looking fantastic!

We're excited to have Tram 24 on the tracks for the summer season!
