You would not believe how much seaweed paua (abalone) will eat in a healthy environment!
Macrocystis ( our main seaweed ) is one of the fastest-growing plants on the planet and grows up to 1 meter per day.
Each tank is examined, checked for uneaten food, etc., and then given more at its next feeding time. Special care is taken with each tank.
Paua are most active in the dark.

We can tell a lot about their health by how much and how little they eat, which can have a lot to do with the water temperature. We know we cannot overload the tank with seaweed as it suffocates them, and they start to crawl out. They absolutely love the smell of slightly older seaweed. Bull kelp is a winner as well. They crawl all over it and will even float on top of it.

We usually insert two, maybe three, depending on the size of the inserts and paua, and we always take care of them every step of the way. The meat from the Abalone Paua is sold domestically in New Zealand after we have taken it out of the shell. Magical colours greet us with an incredible lustre and overtones awaiting their grading. The shells are kept safe in water until we cut the mabe pearls out using a diamond saw.
