It is Mental Health Awareness Week (September 23-29) and to celebrate we are sharing John Randals 'A Good sort of Mad' story.

Wellington professor John Randal has found cycling has ignited an “unusual quest” and contributes to his wellbeing at the same time.

The complete calm and freedom Wellingtonian John Randal feels when he's on his bike has sparked an unusual mission - to ride down every street in New Zealand.

It’s a "project”, as he calls it, that began a decade ago on a gloomy weekend day in his home suburb of Karori. The Victoria University professor wondered how many kilometres of road he’d clock up if he rode down every street and set out with his mate to find out.

It turns out there’s 87km worth of streets in Karori. From there John went on to tackle most Wellington suburbs (5400km), then branched out into the wider region.

He has since cycled more than 24,000 unique kilometres of streets and cul-de-sacs nationwide, from as far north as Kaitaia to Dunedin in the south, and even the Chatham Islands.

“I'm a mathematician, there’s a geeky maths element to all of this. I got totally addicted to the format. It’s a weird kind of challenge but to me it’s fascinating,” he laughs.

“You discover things along the way, like beautiful gardens, strange architecture and amazingly creative letterboxes – on Waiheke Island there’s a scuba tank and on the Kāpiti Coast an outboard motor (pictured below) that have been cleverly converted.”

Most importantly, John is in his happy place on his bike.

The father of two was diagnosed with depression in 2010. Cycling balances him out, he says.

“In many ways one of the biggest factors in my wellness are the moments of complete calm and freedom I feel when I'm riding my bike...

To celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) we delve a little deeper into the maunga that forms part of the Hauraki Rail Trail Great Ride. Te Aroha is a small Waikato town with a big history. It sits at the bottom of Te Aroha maunga (Mt Te Aroha), which is sacred to not only the people of Ngãti Tumutumu but many surrounding iwi as well.

Sacred Te Aroha maunga: From almost everywhere on the Hauraki Rail Trail Great Ride you can see the Te Aroha maunga (Mt Te Aroha). Standing at 952m tall, Mt Te Aroha is the highest point on the Kaimai-Mamaku Range.

The Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park stretches for 70km from the Karangahake Gorge near Waihi to the Mamaku Plateau near Rotorua. It forms a natural barrier between the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions.

For those who haven't experienced a cycle holiday in New Zealand, this post is for you to show you what the experience can look like as part of our Feel Free in NZ this spring campaign 🚲

Following Liv Phyland's 7-day Great Rides of NZ itinerary (available on the Great Rides of NZ website linked in the comments below), the girls were picked up from their Great Journeys New Zealand TranzAlpine train ride with their Adventure South NZ guide Abe - the host with the most!

For the next leg of the trip along the West Coast Wilderness Trail West Coast, New Zealand Abe looked after everything, from accommodation, logistics, bike hire, lunches and even a sing along in the evenings when we all learned that Abe is an amazing musician!

The following days saw Liv and Em hit the trails, and take in other activities like the West Coast Treetop Walk, Cafe & Tower Zipline.

Liv caught up with Jackie from West Coast Wilderness Trail to learn more about the work that has been done on the trails to create accessible experiences for all abilities. From adaptive riders to parents riding with carts, there is a guide on the West Coast Wilderness Trail website that has everything you need to know, including all the pinch points.

Thank you to West Coast, Adventure South NZ and Abe for the incredible experience.

Liv and Andy's next activity in Napier (Hawke's Bay New Zealand) was a core memory maker! Liv and Andy were treated to a VERY SPECIAL experience with driver Tony Mairs from Art Deco Napier who took them in this beautiful vintage car for a 90 minute Art Deco tour of the area.

Thank you Tony for the wonderful experience!

To celebrate Conservation Week/Te Wiki Tiaki Ao Tūroa 2024 from September 2-8, we spoke to Motu Trails Cycleway regular Peter Cavanagh who volunteers his time to help keep predator numbers down in the area.

Interview: Trap master of the Motu Trails 🙌

Head out on the Motu Trails in the Eastern Bay of Plenty and you’re more than likely to come across local e-biker Peter Cavanagh and his beloved pooch Benji.

The pair venture on to the 9km-long Dunes Trail for fresh air and exercise daily, but importantly they check and clear 50-plus predator traps along the way.

The Dunes Trail rolls along the stunning Pacific Coast dunes, one of three wildly different rides that make up the Motu Trails which are part of the 23 Ngā Haeranga Great Rides of New Zealand.

The trails journey through areas important for their biodiversity. The Opotiki coast has many species of shore birds including dotterals, while inland the Urutawa forest has species including North Island robins, tomtits, weka and kiwi... For the full article go to the link below.

Next stop on Liv Phyland's cycle holiday with the Great Rides of NZ was Hawke's Bay New Zealand!

A couple of hours drive away from Taupō Liv and her partner Andy arrived in Napier in Hawke's Bay where they hired e-bikes from the lovely team at Tākaro Trails Cycle Tours Hawke's Bay for a couple of social days cruising between wineries and eating lots of delish food.

The first day of cycling looked like this... (The team at Tākaro Trails Cycle Tours Hawke's Bay give some pretty ace cycle guides below);

Cape Coast Winery Ride – approx. 26km - Set out from Tākaro Trails in Ahuriri along the seashore cycle path towards Napier CBD – an Art Deco wonderland. Stop to admire the real-life movie set, featuring a bustling city centre of Art Deco, Stripped Classical and Spanish Mission buildings which emerged from the ruins of the devastating 1931 earthquake.

Continuing on down Napier’s iconic Marine Parade, with its many family-friendly attractions, towards the Waitangi Regional Park the Ātea a Rangi celestial star compass. This taonga / treasure features a dramatic circle of pou (posts), stones and a whaharoa (gateway). Local carvers have created the pou, representing the points of the compass, to highlight the navigation skills and tools of ancient Māori who navigated the oceans to arrive here and settle.

Following the trail further along and over the confluences and river mouths of the Tutaekuri, Ngaruroro, Te Awa o Mokotūāraro (Clive River) and Tukituki rivers, you’ll emerge in an area known as the Cape Coast – a stretch of coastline taking into the communities of Haumoana, Te Awanga and Clifton, which ultimately leads on to the iconic white cliffs of Cape Kidnappers.

Just beyond the first settlement of Haumoana, you’ll arrive at the architecturally-stunning Elephant Hill winery where you will be booked in for a tasting. Continuing on, a short ride will deliver you to Clearview Estate winery at the start of Te Awanga, where you are booked for a delicious late lunch – great reward for your cycling efforts.

Tākaro Trails then collected them and their bikes from Clearview Estate, and returned them to base. Tākaro Trails have an amazing selection of experiences you can book, and special offers for spring!

After a big day on the bikes, they headed to Madame Social in Napier for food that Liv is still dreaming about. No really, she keeps bringing it up!

Thank you to our partners Hawke's Bay New Zealand, Tākaro Trails Cycle Tours Hawke's Bay & Hawke's Bay Trails and the incredible support to all those who graciously hosted Liv and Andy during their stay including Crown Hotel, Madame Social in Napier, Elephant Hill Winery, and Clearview Estate. For the full 7-day itinerary and spring special offers from our partners go to the Great Rides website where you will find our 'Feel Free in NZ this Spring' campaign page.

To celebrate Conservation Week/Te Wiki Tiaki Ao Tūroa 2024 from September 2-8, we look at how the hundreds of thousands of native trees that volunteers have planted along the Waikato River Trails have helped to increase biodiversity.

Volunteers from local villages, schools, businesses and iwi have rallied together to help plant more than 170,000 native trees along the Waikato River Trails over the past 12 years.

As one of the Ngā Haeranga Great Rides of New Zealand, the trail follows a stretch of New Zealand’s longest river and takes riders through exotic and native forest, wetlands and pretty recreation reserves.

Since the Waikato River Trails Trust started calling on volunteers to help plant natives along the trail in 2011, trail manager Glyn Wooller says biodiversity has increased markedly.

Some happy snaps from Liv Phyland's first day on her first cycling holiday. Liv and her partner Andy had never done a cycling holiday before, in fact, they didn't cycle previously. The Great Rides of New Zealand have something for everyone, of all abilities and experience levels.

For this first section of the trip in Taupō they booked through Jonny at FourB - Bike Hire and Tours who provided their bikes and gear, the BNB and was their host to experience the Great Lake Trail. They booked Venture beyond who met them via boat, and got them and the bikes to where they needed to be.

Having the option of being able to use the e-bike function made things easy when needed.

Thank you to our partners for hosting Liv and Andy, so they can show us what it is like to experience a cycling adventure when you don't have any experience, or even if you do!

How stunning does Love Taupō look for spring riding!

Check out the Feel Free in NZ this Spring campaign page on the Great Rides of NZ website for Liv's full 7-day itinerary and partner specials for this spring.
