When construction began in October 1941, it was supposed to be a camp for 125 thousand prisoners of war. Pieniny National Park protects unique, natural plant communities - Carpathian beech forests, sycamore forests, relict pine canks and thermophilic meadow plants. There are quite a lot of orchids there, two endemic species also. The park is popular because of its beautiful nature and amazing views - rugged, limestone rocks, ravines, cliffs, green meadows with numerous species of butterflies and the wild river with floating rafts.
