KILIMANJARO EXPERIENCE!

The sign says it all. We freaking did it!
And what a bear it was. The first three days of high altitude walking reminded me of EBC trek last November - slowly but surely gaining altitude (although I did enjoy not having to deal with “Nepalese flat”). Until BAM - day four - the climb of over 1000m/3000ft pretty much straight to the top using switchbacks that don’t seem to be there when looking at the mountain up-close. Add the back/neck pain from carrying the daypack, constipated stomach, constant burping/nausea, dehydration, and who knows what else - I really didn’t think I had it in me.

Turns out, I actually did.

BEST TIME TO CLIMB MOUNTAIN KILIMANJARO
Due to Tanzania’s proximity to the equator (between 1 and 11.45 degrees latitude south of the Equator and 29.20 and 40.35 degrees longitudes east), this region does not experience the extremes of winter and summer weather, but rather dry and wet seasons. The local Weather conditions on Kilimanjaro can be somewhat unpredictable to say the very least. Rainfall varies from 2100 mm per year in the rainforest belt to less than 120 mm per year in the summit zone. Similarly, daily temperature changes are unexpected when compared to normal weather cycles, and are largely dependent on Altitude.

KILIMANJARO TREKKING PREPARATIONS
The renowned Mount Kilimanjaro isn’t a technical for those wishing to climb or having any mountaineering experience needed, yet the importance of preparing sufficiently for the journey should nevertheless not be undermined. The Cardio Vascular fitness is important role particularly at higher altitudes where the body will be placed under enormous pressure due to lack of oxygen levels in the atmosphere. Morning jogging put your heart and lungs in prime condition for the climb.

CLIMB KILIMANJARO!
Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s most accessible high summits, a beacon for visitors from around the world. Most climbers reach the crater rim with little more than a walking stick, proper clothing and determination. And those who reach Uhuru Point, the actual summit, or Gillman’s Point on the lip of the crater, will have earned their climbing certificates.
And their memories.

TANZANIA'S WELCOME NOTE!
The Kilimanjaro Mountain caters to be a Tanzania's welcome note because arriving in Kilimanjaro International Airport and seeing the behemoth geomorphologic structure that is Mount Kilimanjaro rise into the African heavens like one giant pimple on the Tanzanian landscape, it is hard to imagine not wanting to set foot on its highest peak. Leaving, without having done so, would in a way feel ‘wrong’! Or if not wrong, at least a missed opportunity!

07/05/2019

The Umbwe Route is the least used, least crowded route on the mountain. For good reason, it is also the most difficult route on the mountain. Umbwe is a steep, constant, straight climb to the top.

Umbwe is mostly avoided because the ascent profile does not give climbers much time to adjust to the altitude. The success rate is very low.

The route takes six days minimum to complete, although seven days is recommended. The descent is down Mweka, on the south-east side of the mountain. Umbwe is not as scenically varied as Machame, Lemosho and Shira, because the path up and down are nearby.

The Umbwe is ideal for those who want a challenging climb, and are very confident in their ability trek over consistently steep slopes. Also, Umbwe is for those who are experienced at altitude and thus are confident that the punishing schedule of Umbwe will not impede their ability to adjust to altitude. Umbwe is also for those who want a secluded hike.

04/05/2019

The Rongai Route is the only trail that starts from the Northern, or Kenyan side of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Because of its remote location the route offers trekkers a relatively unspoilt wilderness experience where it is possible to see large wildlife like antelope, elephant and buffalo.

The North-East side of the mountain gets significantly less moisture than the southern slopes which means that trekkers are less likely to encounter rain. Trekkers are also more likely to get clear, unclouded views of the mountain.

The Rongai Route is flatter than the other Kilimanjaro routes but because of its profile it does not offer trekkers good options to climb high and sleep low.

It can be hiked on a six, seven or even eight day route. The seven or eight day Rongai Routes are highly recommended as trekkers have extra days to acclimatise.

Summit night from Kibo Hut is steep and follows the same path taken by Marangu trekkers which passes Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak.

Due to its remote setting the Rongai Route receives the least traffic of all the routes on Kilimanjaro.

The Rongai Route descends via the Marangu trail.

8 Day Lemosho Route
The Lemosho route is one of our preferred routes due to its low traffic, beautiful scenery and a high summit success rate. The Lemosho route starts off from the west, beginning with a long drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. From there, the first two days are spent trekking through the lush rainforest to Shira Plateau. We recommend a minimum of 7 days to attempt this route but 8 days is preferable for better acclimatization and summit successful. The Lemosho route joins the Machame route at Shira 2 Camp and then follows the same route through the southern circuit and descending at Mweka Gate.

01/05/2019

The Marangu route, also known as the "Coca-Cola" route, is the oldest, most well established route on Kilimanjaro. This is the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations in lieu of camping. There are 60 bunk beds each at Mandara and Kibo Huts, and 120 bunk beds at Horombo Hut. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required. The huts have communal dining halls and basic washrooms, ranging from flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts to long drop toilets and buckets of water at Kibo Hut.
Many favor Marangu because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and direct path. However the short time frame of the route makes altitude acclimatization fairly difficult. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast. Marangu is unfortunately less scenic than the other routes because the ascent and descent are along the same path. It is also the most crowded route for that reason.

KILIMANJARO ROUTES
7 Days Machame Route
The 7 days Machame Route is highly recommended and most used as it allows enough time for acclimatization favouring to summit the top of the mountain.
After registering at the gate office, you start your ascend and enter the rain forest almost immediately. There is a strong possibility of rain in the forest which will transform the trail into a very soggy, muddy and slippery experience. You will have a welcome lunch stop about halfway and will reach the Machame camp (3020m) in late afternoon.

Leopards are skilled climbers, and like to rest in the branches of trees during the day. They are strong beasts, too, and can carry their heavy prey up into the trees so that pesky scavengers, such as hyenas, don’t steal their meal!

Why you should visit the Serengeti?
6: Sightings of other wildlife
It’s easy to get fascinated by the magnanimous wildebeest migration joined by tens of thousands of zebras, gazelles and topi. But, the Serengeti offers more than that. Worldwide known for its abundance and wide array of wildlife and game, it is not uncommon for a visitor to see rare species of antelopes like klipspringer, elands, fringe-eared oryx and dik diks hanging around the kopjes or jackals, hyenas and cheetahs tailing the wildebeest herds.
