When driving in East Africa, add roughly around 30% extra to the travel time given by or .me. Do not map out the entire day, but break up your journey in pieces. Otherwise, you run the risk out the shortest route, leads you to back roads or to a road like this picture. 😅

Here our advice for the best gorilla or chimpanzee trekking experience:

🥾 Wear good and comfortable walking/hiking shoes, suitable for handling slippery slopes.
🦯 Grab a walking stick at the start of your trek.
🧤 Thin gloves can be a great addition as you need to grab a lot of twigs and trees.
👖 Wear long-sleeved clothes to protect yourself from scratches and insect bites while walking through thick bushes.
🧥 Put a raincoat in your bag.
😷 Be prepaired with a facemask.
💦 Take enough water(2L) with you.
🍌 Some snacks or even packed lunch.
📷 Pictures of close-ups are special and usually very appealing. Try a close-up of a hand, foot or face.
👁️ Last but not least.. Take also some time to watch the gorillas and chimps without taking pictures. Put your camera away to better realise where you are, soak in the moment and enjoy!

A visit to Isalo National Park is one of the must-do things on a self-drive trip in Madagascar! Isalo is located on the famous RN7, and its pleasant and dry weather makes it a year-round destination, making it Madagascar’s most celebrated National Park.

The area is particularly famous for its hiking and trekking options, but it also offers an impressive array of flora and fauna. Here, you can find many locally endemic Aloe Vera plants, as well as numerous species of lemurs, including the Sifaka, brown- and ring-tailed lemur as seen in the pictures.

Are you unable to make it to Avenue des Baobabs? Don’t worry, you can still see baobabs in various locations throughout Madagascar. Although many people believe that Avenue des Baobabs is the only place to see them, these trees are a natural part of Madagascar’s flora, and you can find them all over the country.

Other areas in Madagascar that are known for their baobabs include the Spiny Forest in Ifaty (close to Tulear on the RN7), the West Coast, and Ankarafantsika National Park (in Northern Madagascar).

What a beauty! This Crested Crane is not just a bird…it’s Uganda´s national symbol and is featured on the country’s flag and coat of arms. it represents pride, identity, and the unique biodiversity of Uganda.

The Crested Crane, is found in the wetlands and savannahs of Africa. Did you know the chicks are ‘precocial’? That means they can run as soon as they hatch. 🌿🐣

Karibu! A warm Kiswahili welcome that you will hear in many East African coastal regions.

The Swahili language has borrowed a significant number of words from Arabic, mainly due to historical trade relationships along the Swahili coast.

Want to impress the locals? Learn some Swahili greetings before embarking on your Roadtrip adventure, or share what you know with future Roadtrippers in the comments! 🙌

Did you know that there are hundreds of types of bananas worldwide? In Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania, bananas are much more than just a dessert or snack; they are a staple food for the majority of the population. Uganda is even called the Banana Republic of Africa!

Bananas are also used to make beer, wine, juice, flour, cosmetics, and the potent Waragi Gin. Nothing from the banana plant goes to waste, as the leaves are used for packaging or shelter, and the fibers are utilized in making crafts, clothes, and decorations. Speaking about sustainability!

When Roadtripping in East Africa, you’ll surely pass lots of banana plantations and people carrying big bunches of bananas. Don’t forget to tag us in your favourite banana picture! :)

Laura, one of the founders of Roadtrip Africa, has a confession to make.

Despite having been on dozens of safaris, she never quite understood the appeal of birding. That is, until her friend Sophie visited from Switzerland and joined her for a long weekend break.

To Laura’s surprise, Sophie turned out to be a passionate birder. She was in awe of every little creature they encountered, and after an hour, they had only moved a few hundred meters. But Sophie’s excitement was contagious, and Laura enjoyed birding more than she ever thought possible.

If you’re a nature enthusiast like Laura and Sophie, you’ll be pleased to know that East Africa, especially Uganda, is a birder’s paradise. With 1075 different species of birds recorded in Uganda, including 150 unique to the area, you’re sure to spot some incredible species such as the Ugandan Crane, Shoebill Stork, and Great Blue Turaco. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to discover the world of birding in Uganda.

Last week, we discussed “pole pole” and its significance in East Africa.

For those who don’t know, “pole pole” is a Swahili phrase that translates to “slowly, slowly.” It’s a phrase that embodies the laid-back pace of life in Africa and is applicable across the continent.

During your travels, you’ll quickly learn that taking things slow is the norm. Being rushed is almost considered offensive. The best way to enjoy your travels is to relax, take your time, and follow the African Rhythm. By doing this, you create more space to observe and appreciate the many things happening along the way. As you wrap up your journey, you’ll realize that all these ‘moments in between’ became a big and important part of your journey.

So don’t forget to embrace “pole pole” on your next African adventure!

When is the best time to visit East Africa? A question frequently asked by Roadtrippers planning their adventure.

The short & easy answer - it's always a good time to visit! It never gets cold, and even during the rainy season your travel will not be hindered as the rains can be heavy but are typically short.

Personally, we are fan of travelling during the off-peak months (March - May and Oct & Nov), with fewer crowds, better deals, and when the landscape is at its most beautiful.

Check the ' best time to visit ' section on our website, where we discuss the weather per month.

Fun fact: Giraffes have a unique way of dealing with the rain. Instead of seeking cover (as we would), they gracefully tilt their heads to minimize rain flowing down their necks. So, next time you spot a giraffe in the rain, take a moment to appreciate their elegance. 🦒 🌿

Did you know that Tanzania is great for hiking?

Of course, we all know the snowcapped Mount Kilimanjaro. Yet it's good knowing there are several exciting shorter hikes that cost much less time and money to climb.

Shown in the picture is Ol Doinyo Lengai, close to Lake Natron. This dormant volcano can be summited in a day. You start your hike during the night because climbing during the day is too hot.

Or how about rhino trekking in the Serengeti? It costs USD 100 and can be arranged on arrival at the gate.

The Usambara Mountains, nestled between Moshi and the Tanzanian coast, are great for lovely waterfall hikes suitable for the entire family.

The rainforested Udzungwa Mountains is a National Park you can only explore on foot. There are several excellent hiking trails with natural ponds and waterfalls for a refreshing swim. A Garden of Eden experience!

Which hike is on your bucket list?
