No trip to Burundi is complete without getting to experience the thrill of tracking chimpanzees in the wild. Imagine this: wading through the slopes of a dense jungle to catch a glimpse of our ancestral cousins and hearing their shrieks both up close and in the distance. Not to mention, in the process, you’ll get to visit one of the least visited countries in Africa and on Earth at large.

If you want to go chimpanzee trekking, but don’t want to be part of so much jam, then there’s one place to go for budget chimpanzee tracking and that's Bururi Forest Nature Reserve in Burundi. Bururi Forest Nature Reserve offers the best opportunities to spot chimps as the park is both small and home to a healthy number of primates (60+ and growing). This makes it easier to locate the chimps. Visitors are allowed to spend around an hour observing the chimps as they interact with one another.

A visit to DR Congo would not be complete without taking on the giant Nyiragongo Volcano. Nyiragongo has the world’s largest lava lake and it sits in a towering caldera 3,470m above sea level. Nyiragongo is one of the best treks you will ever do in your entire life!

Your trek will commence at Kibati Ranger Post situated at an altitude of 1,870m. This section of the trek is characterized by dense jungle where you’re bound to encounter many of the weird and wonderful animals of Virunga. This often includes chimpanzees, monkeys, reptiles, and of course more bird species than you can count.

The ascent up Nyiragongo can take between 4 – 6 hours, and you don’t have to worry as you’ll have plenty of breaks before you reach the summit. The slowest team members will set the group’s pace, and if you want to make sure you don’t suffer from altitude sickness, we highly recommend being last to the top. Sitting on the caldera rim, looking down at the world’s largest active lava lake churning around will make you mesmerized.

Meet the Dinka, one of the many beautiful tribes that make up the multifaceted, glorious continent of Africa in South Sudan. The Dinka are one of the largest ethnic groups living in South Sudan. They are part of a group of cultures known as the Nilotic peoples. Central to their society are cattle, which form the basis of livelihood and the economy of the Dinka.

The Dinka are composed of many independent but interlinked clans, with groups ranging in size from 1,000 to 30,000 people. They’re known for deriving religious power from nature and the world around them, ascribing great value to cows

Farming and agriculture also play an integral role. Labor has traditionally been distinctly divided along gender lines, with men traditionally in the role of cattle herders and women holding the responsibility for growing crops, cooking, and drawing water. However, in recent years, the division of work has become more shared across families.

Indeed, Dinka culture is centered on cattle. It is the medium of exchange whether in marriage, payment of debts and blood price, or for sacrifices to the spirits and on major occasions and rites. It is said that they keep cattle for their beauty and the prestige large herds bestow on their owners. It is said that they keep cattle for their beauty and the prestige large herds bestow on their owners.

Many of the tribe’s population hold names derived from the color of their cattle. A boy could be named after the color of the family’s best ox (Mayom, Malith, Mayen) or a girl after a cow (Ayen, Yar). The founder of the later would-be nation, John Garang, is called Mabior or the White Bull. The white bull is the most prized and is sought after for sacrifices in celebration. Machar, meaning black bull, is the second most important for sacrifices.

The Dinka are primarily transhumant pastoralists, moving their herds of cattle to riverine pastures during the dry season (December to April) and back to permanent settlements in savanna forests during the rains, when their food crops, principally millet, are grown.

Cultural traditions around becoming an adult focus more on young men than young women and involve boys receiving marks on their foreheads, created by the scarring from large gashes that they submit to in silence to prove their manhood. They also take a new name, or a “cattle name”, which can be the name of their favorite bull a characteristic of an animal, or their favorite thing about cattle herding. Boys often have favorite animals in the herd from spending long hours with them in cattle camps.

They will apply ash from burnt cow dung over their bodies to protect them from insects while using cow urine to bleach their hair. They train the horns of their bulls from a young age to give them their shape, and boys will often walk with their arms in the same shape as their favorite animal’s horns. Cattle also are used as a dowry in traditional Dinka marriages.

In African languages, linguists classify Dinka as a major language in the Nilotic category. You can often determine what holds the most importance to a culture by the amount of words that they have to describe it. The Dinka have a widely diverse vocabulary but also have an estimated 400 words just for cattle, referring to their colors, forms, diseases, and movements.

Traditional Dinka baai (homes) are constructed with wooden poles and thatched roofs. Men traditionally lash the foundational poles together and then women complete the roofs with dried grass and reeds. The walls are constructed of mud. This is the reason that so many homes have been destroyed in the recent flooding, the mud walls collapse when they are underwater for too long.

For a grand display of one of Mother Nature’s best shows, Bandingilo National Park in South Sudan is the place to be. Bandingilo should be a part of a wildlife lover’s bucket list because it's where the real deal happens: the second-largest migration of animals on the planet. Just imagining or looking at photos of the migration is already magnificent, and what more seeing them firsthand. The bellows and the sounds of the movements work with the majestic views of the Serengeti to deliver a stunning show. The migrating antelopes are waiting for their audience.

Bandingilo National Park, sometimes known as Badingilo, is located in South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria area. Established in 1992, as one of the National Parks of South Sudan, it covers more than 10,000 square kilometers and features vast marshlands that extend into Jonglei state, as well as the Sudd.

Bandingilo National Park is home to the world’s second-largest annual animal migration, which includes multiple species of antelope such as reedbuck, tiang, and white-eared kob. During the rainy season (April, May, June, July, August, September, and October), the herds migrate into the Park from Boma National Park, making it an ideal time to witness wildlife in South Sudan.

In addition, elephants, lions, giraffes, hippos, and zebras, among others, all call the Park home. Bandingilo National Park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 400 different bird species making this park home.

The swampy Southern National Park in South Sudan is brimming with wildlife, thanks to three rivers that drain there: Jur, Gel, and Ibba. These streams make the Park an ideal habitat for catfish, tilapias, bichirs, lungfish, and aba (a type of electric fish). Crocodiles are also spotted in the area. In Sudan, going south means excitement.

Located in Central Equatoria State, Southern National Park stands as another cornerstone among the National Parks of South Sudan. Founded in 1939, the park covers an area of 23,000 square kilometers of bushveld and gallery forests.

The Park’s wildlife includes giant eland, hartebeest, waterbuck, kob, korrigum, oribi, African buffalo, Kordofan giraffe, reedbuck, lion, colobus monkey, and giant forest hog, to name a few.

Visitors may also enjoy its outstanding birdlife with marabou storks and pelicans in view. Southern National Park is sparsely inhabited and receives few tourists, making it a hidden gem worth exploring on South Sudan Tours.

South Sudan's Boma National Park is a wildlife watcher’s paradise because it is home to the largest concentration of mammals in the country. It’s an important migration path since the Park is one of the largest in Africa. Its floodplains and grasslands are home to an abundance of wildlife including buffaloes, lions, leopards, elephants, nubian giraffes, cheetahs, antelopes, zebras, and gazelles, among others.

Boma National Park is a protected area in eastern South Sudan near the Ethiopian border. It was established in 1977 and covers 22,800 km² of grasslands and floodplains and is the largest National Park in South Sudan.

The white-eared migration in Boma National Park is such a huge attraction that those who haven’t experienced it should be inquisitive to find out or even go on a safari to Boma National Park to have a glimpse of such a huge annual wildlife exodus. The study shows the white-eared kobs are found in the east of the Nile River in South Sudan, in the clay plains and the wetlands with a more vivid population constituted in Boma National Park.

The migration routes of the white-eared kobs have been marked and their movements are triggered by factors ranging from the dry and wet seasons. The frequent flooding during the wet season pushes them to the drier areas. their movements to the drier areas sometimes pose a huge risk to them as they are exposed to poaching by the local population who hunt them for their meat.

Birdwatchers are also in for a treat, too, because Boma is home to several bird species such as the black-chested snake eagles and Ruppell's vultures among others. With its abundance of wildlife, Boma is just waiting for curious travelers.

With its impressive array of wildlife and breathtaking scenery, Lantoto National Park in South Sudan is a must-visit destination for any nature lover or outdoor enthusiast. Lantoto National Park is a protected area in Central Equatoria, South Sudan. The Park has an area of over 760 km² and is predominantly woodland, forest, and open glades. The Park was named by the Sudan's central government in the Wildlife Act of 1986 and the Wildlife Conservation and National Parks Act of 2003.

Those who want to check out elephants in their natural habitat should visit Lantoto because the gentle giants pass through this Park to neighboring Garamba National Park across the border in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Park features open grasslands, perfect for panorama shots.

Lantoto is also home to woodlands and forests, where buffalos, baboons, antelopes, and ostriches thrive. A mountain also rests in the Park, the Jabal Mbangi, which adds an accent to the already picture-perfect landscape. Lantoto might not be as big as Boma, but it’s not short on surprises.

Amboseli National Park remains one of Kenya’s best and most kept secrets. The Park exhibits uniqueness which brings travelers to Amboseli on safari with unheard-of experiences. The uniqueness of this park is derived from the views of the Kilimanjaro mountain which by no means qualifies to be Africa's watch tower.

Located at the footsteps of Mount Kilimanjaro, on the southern Kenyan border, Amboseli National Park spreads over 392 square kilometers. The Park is slightly easier to navigate such as the dried-up basins of Lake Amboseli, the acacia woodland areas, savannah grasslands, and wetlands.

This scenic park is sometimes referred to as the land of the giants or the home of the African elephants, Amboseli National Park is not to be missed when talking about dream African wildlife safari experiences.

The park's open plains and grasslands offer unobstructed views, creating a picturesque setting with the mountain as a backdrop. The snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro, often glistening in the sunlight, adds to the beauty and allure of Amboseli National Park.

Located on the edge of the Ewaso Ng’iro River, the Samburu National Reserve is a 165-square-kilometer haven for the conservation of wildlife. Like most of Northern Kenya, Samburu offers a relatively more exclusive experience than you may find at other Kenya conservation areas such as the Masai Mara and Amboseli.

In addition to being relatively uncrowded, it features unique wildlife species that you may not find in most other parks. These include the rare giraffe gazelle, popularly known as gerenuk, the Beisa oryx, the reticulated giraffe, the endangered Grevy’s zebra (also known as imperial zebra), and the Somali ostrich. These are known as the ‘Samburu Special Five’ as you are more likely to spot them here than anywhere else.

The park is also a haven for birds with at least 450 recorded species. It is home to big cats, large herds of elephants, and wild dogs among other animals.

Visit the surprisingly well-hidden gem of Kenya’s largest desert - the Chalbi, a gorgeous Kalacha Oasis situated on its northern edge. This picturesque and tranquil setting offers a welcome break from the sweltering heat of the desert thanks to its acacia trees and doum palms. Kalacha Springs is a popular watering spot for the local Gabbra community and its livestock.

27/03/2024

Popularly referred to as the ‘Jade Sea’, because of its magnificent turquoise color, Lake Turkana in northern Kenya is a marvel of nature in every sense of the word. It derives this unique color from its abundant algae population. The almost 250-kilometer-long water body is famed for being the largest permanent desert lake in the world. Lake Turkana also happens to be the largest alkaline lake globally and the fourth largest lake overall in Africa.

Its very existence beats logic as it is surrounded by harsh arid terrain. The unique chemical composition of the waters has also drawn considerable interest and research. It sits on rich volcanic rocks with very high alkali concentrations. But while the water is too alkaline and too saline for mollusks, it supports a wide array of fish species including gigantic Nile perch. It also provides a crucial stopover point for migrant birds from the Palearctic regions.

27/03/2024

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is a haven for the rare and wonderful wildlife in Kenya while simultaneously offering one of the most exclusive and individualized safari experiences in East Africa. Lewa is a part of the wider Laikipia landscape. Most of the conservancy lies on the Laikipia Plateau at altitudes of over 1,500 meters. Just 40 km to the south, the jagged figure of Mount Kenya looms on the horizon, its rolling foothills imparting a dramatic topography to Lewa.

Lewa’s deep conservation roots have ensured a thriving wildlife population, including the Big 5 (though leopard sightings are still relatively unusual), and rarities like the Grevy’s zebra. Naturally, both black and white rhinos are one of the main drawcards, and Lewa is one of the best places to view the two African rhino species. Not much compares to the sight of a critically endangered black rhino out in the open on Lewa’s grasslands, with the singular outline of Mount Kenya in the background.

The northern “specials” are all present, including the reticulated giraffe, common Beisa oryx, gerenuk, and Somali ostrich. The conservancy is a population stronghold of the endangered Grevy’s zebra, and the growing numbers have been translocated to bolster populations in surrounding conservancies. Lions and cheetahs abound, and packs of African-painted wolves occasionally make a fleeting appearance.
