Representing Realities is a Place-Based Learning Community that includes freshmen majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science. In this program, students will discover how math and computer science courses use representations of reality to discover the world around them. They examine how structures and models can be found not just within their disciplines but also in their natural surroundings. Students explore this concept by looking at the patterns found in local Native basketry. This unique experience is just the beginning of working alongside faculty and students who are passionate about modeling the world around them.

Our final highlight for Women's History Month is Tu Youyou, a pharmaceutical chemist. Youyou researched treatments for malaria which was causing tremendous casualties among soldiers in the Vietnam War. In college, she studied medicinal herbs which inspired her to review ancient texts to understand traditional Chinese ways of fighting malaria. After testing thousands of compounds from these texts, she was able to isolate the compound for sweet wormwood which showed a 100 percent recovery rate. Youyou was awarded a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015 for her findings.

This week's highlight for Women's History Month is Dr. Adriana Ocampo, a planetary geologist and Program Manager at NASA. Dr. Ocampo was born in Colombia then moved to the United States as a teenager. At a young age, Ocampo knew she wanted to work for NASA and landed a summer job at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. She got her BS in geology from CSULA and MS in planetary geology from CSUN. Her research led to the discovery of the Chicxulub impact crater, the crater resulting from the impactor that marked the end of the Cretaceous period and the extinction of more than 50% of the Earth's species including all non-avian dinosaurs. Today she is the Lead Program Executive for the New Frontiers Program which has led missions to Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and Pluto.

This week's highlight for Women's History Month is Lynn Ann Conway, a computer scientist, electrical engineer, and LGBTQ activist. Conway worked with leading tech institutions such as MIT, IBM, and Xerox PARC where she led research on computer hardware design. Her groundbreaking work simplified the chip design commonly used in most devices today. The design allowed for multiple circuit designs from various sources to be compacted into one single chip. Although she had a successful career, she faced frequent discrimination for her gender identity and continues to advocate for trans rights in her retirement by providing an online platform to address transgender issues.

Our final highlight of Black professionals in STEM is Dr. Percy Lavon Julian. Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Dr. Julian grew up in the racially segregated era of Jim Crow and faced racism throughout his career. He was one of the first Black men to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry. His research focused on synthesizing steroids from plant compounds which pioneered an industrial large-scale chemical synthesis of human hormones. This contribution radically reduced the costs of synthetic hormones making treatments for conditions such as glaucoma and rheumatoid arthritis more affordable and accessible.
