Chosen from a highly competitive pool of nearly 509,000 applicants, these Scholars embody a commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and service.

This year’s cohort of Stamps Scholars is diverse, hailing from 39 U.S. states, 2 U.S. territories, and 13 countries, and representing a wide array of backgrounds and ambitions. Although young, many have already made significant positive impacts on their communities and have professional goals such as alleviating disparities in healthcare access, ensuring ethical use of artificial intelligence, designing and building Formula 1 racecars, engineering solutions to assist with national park conservation efforts, and performing on Broadway, to name some. They are united by their dedication to making a meaningful impact on the world at large.

The Stamps Scholarship covers up to the full cost of attendance for four years of undergraduate study at most partner institutions, along with enrichment funds for academic and professional development. These funds enable Scholars to pursue opportunities such as study abroad, conferences, internships, and research. With an estimated total value of $59.3 million over their time in school, the scholarships for this incoming class underscore the Stamps Scholars Program’s commitment to fostering future leaders.

At the University of Miami, Stamps Scholars Alexandr Kim, Ethan Tieu, and Taylor Lin have teamed up on the innovative Bonsai Applied Computations Group, a new organization aimed at bridging the gap between technical computer science (CS) talent and research projects across diverse domains at the institution.

“We noticed there was a deficit of research opportunities for computer science students at UMiami, but there is an abundance of talented CS students here,” said Kim. He and his team, consisting of 13 members in total, also noticed that many faculty members conducting research across disciplines lack computer science knowledge, thus having to outsource to find CS talent for their projects. “These are biologists. These are business students. And they don’t have the computer science background. Why not marry the demand from researchers with talented computer scientists? That’s what we’re trying to do.”

Read more about this exciting project below.

“I’m a very empathetic person, and so my heart has always been in a place where I want to listen to people, and I just care deeply that people feel heard,” said Moore, a senior double majoring in journalism and English. “I think storytelling can be really powerful and that it bridges gaps and barriers."

Mercer University Nuren Lara is dedicated to research that addresses environmental issues and hopes to one day become a college professor.

Lara has helped with research mainly focused on lixiviants, chemicals used to extract certain elements from ores or minerals. He has been involved in the ongoing project to monitor the release of mercury in artisanal and small-scale gold mining, both in the Mercer lab and abroad during Mercer On Mission trips to Guyana.

“My goal now is to meld together the two things, lixiviants and leaching of heavy metals and seeing how I can study that with the more electrochemical techniques I’ve learned over the past two summers,” Lara said.

At Mercer University, Nuren Lara has been able to develop and apply his love of environmental science.

This past summer, two Stamps Scholars from the University of Pittsburgh, Jake Lorenz and Sophia Shapiro, participated in the White House Internship Program, in the Office of Scheduling and Advance.

At the White House, Jake served as the scheduling intern. In this role, he authored drafts of the daily schedule, prepared materials for senior Administration staff, and assisted with managing incoming scheduling requests for the Administration. He said, “This work was unbelievably exciting and allowed me to see the breadth of what the White House does every single day.”

Sophia’s role as the White House advance intern involved a variety of responsibilities. She supported the Office of Scheduling and Advance to advance domestic and international trips for President Biden, helping coordinate many aspects of these trips, including staffing, travel, logistics, budgeting, credentialing, and visas. Further, she supported the proclamation signing that established the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument, as well as the President’s remarks to the Truman Civil Rights Symposium at the National Archives in D.C.

Following the completion of their internships, Jake and Sophia volunteered as Advance Associates and served on the Advance Team for President Biden’s recent trip to Hanoi, Vietnam. In this role, they helped prepare sites and events on behalf of the White House. These two Scholars worked in tandem on various sites, ensuring the on-the-ground logistics for this historically significant international visit.
