Congratulations to client Chico Operating LLC on the sale of the business to a national company. It was a pleasure to work closely with the founders of this company, Hoppy and Cathy Taylor, through the negotiation and sale of the business and referred to CollierLaw by long-time clients.

Excited to be working with client companies growing and selling their businesses. One client is an early stage software company selling to an international group, and another client is a family-owned convenience store selling to a national company.

When experience matters, contact me for strategic advice on getting the deal done.

VICTORY FOR IMMIGRANTS. Following a challenging four weeks doing pro bono work for two immigrant families detained and separated at the border from their children, we have obtained complete victory for them! Today both women have orders reversing a negative finding that would have seen them deported without their children. Now they are released from separate detention centers and together with their children, and are moving through asylum proceedings. Many many thanks to our team-lawyer Vero Marquez and assistant Mel Reyes, and the guidance of Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, American Gateways, and Grassroots Leadership, and to my non-pro bono clients for their support and providing business work that allows me to do this important pro bono work!

Keep your legal costs low by understanding the business expectations of the deal-from start-up to sale of the business.

When co-founding a business ask the other founder what each proposed goal means to them so you can reach an understanding of the basic terms of owning and managing the business. CollierLaw can guide you through this process and put it in writing.

So proud to have been outside general counsel for Disco Learning Media, a 3 year-old Austin, TX company, through its recent acquisition by Probility. It was such a pleasure working closely through the deal with founders Juan Garcia Coleman Tharpe and Michael Webber. These three are moving with the deal to the acquirer. Watch them and see that they will be serial entrepreneurs as they make good things happen. Great people, great work. My privilege to work with them.

Frequent client question--isn't there a form for that? Frequent response: Probably, but is it complete or are key terms missing? Forms can be places to start, but not where to end. CollierLaw has 35 years of experience in business transactions, drafting, negotiating and enforcing them. When experience matters--CollierLaw.

Bad Signal

Thinking about the time in Dallas years ago when I helped a client who was sexually abused by her father. It was a civil case and a crazy one---and one I remember like it was yesterday. And only one of many sexual abuse or sexual harassment cases I have handled.

The business used a lot of cable and amplifiers and low-tech electronic gadgets with names like "load isolators" and "heliax." That much is evident on the videotape his daughter's attorney shot a few weeks after Randy James Angle went on the lam.Inside Angle's shop in an industrial section of Garlan...

Just in from a client:

I needed legal advice on a complex project involving the sales contract of my firm. Working with me under an impossible deadline, Attorney Collier made me feel like I was her top priority, helped me devise a plan to sell my business as expeditiously as possible, assisted me in evaluating offers from potential purchasers, executing a successful negotiation strategy and navigating a maze of issues involved with a business sale including technology, advertising, lease assignment, and employees. She met my needs and exceeded my expectations.

It was my privilege to assist this lawyer.

Informed clients are the best kind. The internet provides a good starting place to understand what is needed to work with your attorney. Bring your lawyer all the facts about your project, and your ideas in order to get the best value while working with an experienced attorney.

There are things you can do to push back against 'Google Scholars.' Here are a few of my suggestions.

My pro bono legal project for 2016 is to study the Texas dangerous/vicious dogs laws and then to produce self-help materials for dog owners (who usually can't afford attorneys), to educate animal control officers and judges about the laws/ordinances, and...sigh...yes... to revise the laws that are cruel, unrealistic and that kill dogs that are not really dangerous. Many have stepped up to say they will help. If anyone wants to be a part of this project, let me know. It's a big project.

Think twice and write the co-ownership doc carefully for your business. Biz divorces are my forte.

We will change the dangerous dog laws in this country-who's with me?

Some kind words from a client just received:

Brenda has been fantastic to work with-quick responses to all communications, knowledgeable about all kinds of business trademark and legal issues of all kinds, and very easy to work with. I'm very pleased with her work and the results she has delivered for us over the past few years, and I'd highly recommend using her services to any business."
