In the world of custom builders occasionally you get to meet your heroes and even rarer occasions you become legitimate friends.. One such hero meeting turned into genuine friendship when I met @rolandsands from @rolandsandsdesign . Somehow the dude has remained a hero.
I met Roland Sands in 2013 after our first trip to LA with a few of our custom bikes that we’d just filmed with at Jay Leno’s Garage. I reached out to Roland and he graciously invited us to ride down to tour his shop in Long Beach. We rode a few bikes down and a bond was instantly formed as he told me he’d been inspired by our mezzanine at @revivalcycles that he’d seen in videos and designed one for his own garage after seeing ours.
Like very few at his level, Roland does what he says he’s going to do and consistently does it with enviable compassion and a relaxed attitude that very few could even aspire to attain. His ambition is only exceeded by his compassion and on more than one occasion in our travels around the world he has made me laugh so damn hard that I cried. Thanks for keeping it light Roland and always inspiring us to not take life so damned seriously.

@jonnylieberman and I met on the set of an automotive-themed game show at @jaylenosgarage back in 2018. I was already a fan of Jonny’s work as an automotive journalist from Jalopnik and Motor Trend and from his hosting on the show “Head to Head”. In Person he was even more bombastic and knowledgeable and as we toured around Jay Leno’s Garage after filming it became apparent that Jonny’s passion for cars, design and engineering were in a league of their own. I’ve always appreciated Jonny’s blunt and from-the-hip opinions and I’m truly honored to have him attend and help select a few of the cars coming to our show this year! Thanks Jonny!

Shinya Kimura is a mythical artist whose chosen medium is motorcycles. He is a sculptor at heart and he uses that heart every time he builds a bike. Early on we spent time with Shinya in his break room….the epic canyon up the street from his workshop in Azusa just outside of LA. He took us for a ride on his motorcycles up to the top of the mountain and we were never the same. He has graced the Handbuilt Show with his machines many times, but for HBS LA we will assemble 6 of his motorcycles which will be the largest gathering of his work ever. Trust us, you will NOT want to miss this.
