Remember to bring not only your cameras, but your patience with you when visiting Blowing Rock and the Blue Ridge Parkway over the coming weeks! The roads are busier than normal at the moment, so for those of you traveling, allow yourself extra time with the anticipation of higher traffic. Fall is a wonderful time in the mountains, and by taking the time to consider others we can ensure a wonderful experience for everyone! 🍁

It's Fall Y'All!

Here's today's Grandfather Mountain report:

The color change is advancing daily, and the forecasted weather of sunny days and cooler temperatures through this weekend should bring about excellent conditions for leaf-peeping during a visit to Grandfather Mountain. Particularly scenic spots for viewing fall color this weekend are around the Swinging Bridge, Black Rock Trail and the picnic area near Forrest Gump Curve. Throughout this busy season, it is strongly recommended to book your tickets in advance online: grandfather.com/tickets.

Good morning. Here is the second draft of the snow map for the Sunday winter storm. The biggest changes this morning are east of the mountains where an Atlantic conveyor belt of warmer air aloft will change snow to sleet in the Foothills for a time on Sunday, cutting into snow totals some. Still, this will be a crippling winter storm for much of the area. Some point snow(& sleet) totals for selected cities: Boone: 10-13 inches, Wilkesboro: 6-8 inches, Hickory: 3-6 inches, Morganton/Lenoir/Marion 6-10 inches, Greater Asheville/Hendersonville 8-12 inches. The snow winds down quickly Sunday evening, although a lingering period of northwest flow snow showers will continue along the NC/TN line on Monday, with considerable blowing and drifting of snow.

Appalachian State University professor and renowned fall foliage tracker, Howard Neufeld has made his annual prediticiton!

Professor Neufeld stated “Mid October, from the 10th-20th would be (peak colors) for 3,000 to 4,000 feet in elevation”.
