Today, we celebrate Juneteenth.
Juneteenth marks the date slavery was officially abolished in the South, when Union troops reached Galveston, Texas, with the news of the end of the Civil War in 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth has long been celebrated in the African American community, particularly in Texas. One of the biggest advocates and educators of Juneteenth is Opal Lee. Known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," Opal Lee is a retired teacher, counselor, and activist in the movement to make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday.
In 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday.
