Tip of the Week...

What are the consequences of mixing different types of exhaust vents on the same roof above a shared/common attic? Inefficient airflow, weather entry, mold, and more.

Jerry Becker, Roof Life of Oregon, Tigard, OR, was kind enough to film it. Thank you, Jerry!

Please do not mix exhaust (ridge vents, gable vents, wind turbines, box vents, off ridge vents, power fans).

"I guess a shingle-over ridge vent without the shingles adds to the overall airflow." -- John Tucker, A Friend in Roofing, Georgetown, TN

Wow! Thank you for finding and sharing this, John. Shingle-over ridge vents are designed to have matching roof shingles installed on top for proper fastening to the roof, weather protection, and cosmetics.

"I did a roof inspection today and I thought you'd like this for your collection. Mixed attic exhaust ventilation and ZERO intake airflow." -- Mark Duncan, Hudson Bay Construction, Fulshear, TX

Thanks for thinking of us and sharing this, Mark. Two strikes here. Strike one: Combining different types of attic exhaust vents above a shared attic space short-circuits the airflow and could invite weather entry. Strike two: Exhaust without the correct amount of intake is useless.

Tip of the Week...

"This roof was replaced 2-3 years ago but every 6 months or so the homeowner said they had to get into the attic to spray the mold growth that was forming. When they asked our company to get involved we noticed the following in the attic: The ridge vent airflow slots were roofed over; thus they had zero exhaust ventilation. Several of the bathroom fan ductwork runs terminated into the attic instead of going to a dedicated vent with a damper. The nails were rusty. Check the attic!" -- Sara Klindtworth, Solid Roofing NW, Salem, OR.

Success Story...

"This was the hole that was underneath a box vent (far left picture). Attic had mold due to lack of exhaust ventilation. Sad. We corrected the hole and installed a High Efficiency roof-mount power fan." -- Nate Donahue, Simpatico Roofing and Consulting, Grand Rapids, MI.

Thank you for sharing this, Nate, and using AirVent products. Proper exhaust and intake airflow through the attic helps prevent problems like mold. The HE15 features a variable speed motor and computer chip -- it runs based on what's happening in the attic.

"Can't make it up. Installed in 2022 with 3 different types of attic exhaust vents." -- Jeff Riss, Peak Roofing & Construction, Frisco, TX

We call that a trifecta but it's not a winner! Mixing 2 or more different types of attic exhaust vents on the same roof above a shared attic space short-circuits the airflow (causes inefficient flow and invites weather ingestion).

The bathroom fan is exhausting near the intake/soffit vents. This could allow some of the moisture to flow right into the attic. Not good. Bathroom fans should exhaust through the roof or out the side of the house to dedicated vents designed for bathroom venting.

"We took the moulding piece out to open a 1-inch gap over the top plate of the wall. Next we installed insulation baffles in the attic to create an airflow channel. Then we insulated. We installed continuous soffit vent by fastening it with trim nails and sealant (zoom in on the photo). It looks great but better yet it works great." -- Craftsmen Home Improvements, Edina, MN
