River sittin’ is an art form that only country kids can teach ☀️
When you live in a landlocked state, you have to get creative to enjoy water. Real Vermonters know that “goin’ to the river” is the ethos of our culture. There’s nothing better than lounging and splashing in the hills!
The true art of river sitting is getting there without hiking. On hot days, we all just want to be in water, not lug a chair and cooler on a hike. There are many roadside gems to access instead!
Here are 6 tips for finding the best rivers:
💦 Start at the source: @vt_rivers and @vtstateparks. VRC has 92 conserved sites and there are 52 state parks. You’re bound to find somewhere great!
💦 If you want secluded spots, search google maps for blue lines. Then zoom in to find roads by the water. The more rural the area, the better chance of pull-offs. Big rivers along main roads rarely have access points, so aim for small rivers on backroads. Every town has a River Road… wink wink.
💦 Look on the map for covered bridges or railroads. Cleared land supports these structures, often making “beaches” under them.
💦 Then go outside and EXPLORE! There’s nothing on google labeled as “river sitting spot”... and no one in their right mind would post a reel giving away these locations. The ONLY way to find them is to drive, walk, or bike backroads until you see a pull-off.
💦 Once you find a good spot, assess for risks: steep boulders, overgrown trails full of ticks, poor water quality, or fast water. DO NOT attempt to access rivers without surveying for risks. Swimmers die every summer because they slip from boulders or they’re unprepared for fast currents. It’s not worth risking your life!
💦 Never swim in water that isn’t moving… b
