A shipwreck is visible from time to time on the beach off Flambeau Street in Hatteras Village. It is loosely called the Flambeau wreck due to its location. It shows off weathered wood from time to time depending on whether it is uncovered due to wind and waves. The wreck is thought to be from an early 1900s barge. Best post ever !

Took a DNA test and it turns out, we're 100% that #1 beach in the country.

Every year, Dr. Stephen Leatherman aka "Dr. Beach" surveys the 650 public beaches along the U.S. Coast. You could say he gives them each a DNA test, using 50 criteria to measure beach quality. From water, sand, and wildlife, to safety and management - he considers it all!

Beaches within Cape Hatteras National Seashore have consistently made it on his annual Top 10 beach list, with this year being no exception. This is the second time the Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach has cinched the #1 spot (last time was in 2007), with the Old Lighthouse Beach in Buxton coming in at #6 this year.

For we hope you are able to get out and on our pristine, protected beaches!

Do you or someone you're traveling with have mobility issues? Cape Hatteras National Seashore offers beach wheelchairs to assist with doing what we all love - getting outside and enjoying the beach!

Beach wheelchairs are available in all districts at the Lifeguarded beaches: Coquina Beach Access (Bodie Island), Old Lighthouse Beach Access (Buxton, Hatteras Island), Frisco Beach Access (Hatteras Island), and Ocracoke Beach Access (Ocracoke Island). Lifeguards are on duty Memorial Day - Labor Day from 9:00am - 5:00pm.

You may also inquire about beach wheelchairs at any visitor center if you're traveling outside of the Memorial Day - Labor Day window. Please visit our website for other Accessibility options at https://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/accessibility.htm
