We are excited to announce the Erickson Aircraft Collections most recent acquisition: 1949 GRUMMAN F8F-2 BEARCAT

Perhaps the best-performing piston fighter ever, the F8F began as a project to provide the WWII fleet with a rapid-climb interceptor to replace the F6F Hellcat. Powered by the same Pratt & Whitney 2800 engine as the Hellcat, the empty weight is approximately a ton less allowing a record-setting time-to-climb to 10,000 feet in under 100 seconds. While the aircraft did not see combat in WWII, it was the first featured aircraft of the post-war, newly formed Blue Angels and continued in active service well into the turbine era.

Now on display at the Erickson Aircraft Collection!

Invasion of Malaya
8 Dec 1941 – 11 Jan 1942

In 1939, Malaya produced 40% of the world’s rubber, 60% of the world’s tin, and provided a convenient staging location for the invasion of oil-rich Borneo, Java, and Sumatra. The Japanese needed resources badly after US embargoes stymied its war preparations. By late 1941 invasion seemed inescapable. Japanese troops moved down the peninsula from Thailand, then into Malaya starting Dec. 8,1941 reaching Kuala Lumpur on January 11, 1942.

In December 1941, the Japanese Army crossed the border into Hong Kong. The ensuing battle lasted eighteen days. The garrison fought gallantly against the odds, but on Christmas Day they were forced to surrender. It had been a losing battle. Winston Churchill knew that Hong Kong, if attacked by the Japanese, could not be defended or relieved. Hong Kong would have to be sacrificed. Churchill’s order to Sir Mark Young, the Governor, was that the garrison must resist to the end, and this they did.

Here are ten facts about the battle.

Squadron Leader Leonard Birchall, Commander of the RCAF's 413 General Surveillance Squadron, arrived from Scotland in Ceylon [Sri Lanka] on April 2, 1942. Two days later, on his first patrol, he detected the Japanese fleet streaming towards the island. His radio operator managed to send off a warning message before the Catalina was shot down by Japanese fighters. Although three of his crew were killed when the Japanese machine-gunned the airmen in the water, Birchall and the remaining crewmen were taken prisoner. They did not know until after the war that their hurried message had resulted in the island's defences being ready when the Japanese attack came. The effective defence, combined with the American naval victory in the Battle of the Coral Sea a few weeks later, meant that the Japanese never threatened that part of Asia again. Birchall and his crew became known as "the Saviours of Ceylon." After the war, Birchall was decorated not only for his distinguished flying but also for his courage and leadership in resisting his Japanese jailers during years of imprisonment.

Estevan Point Lighthouse was the only Canadian location attacked during World War II. Edward T. Redford, then chief wireless operator at Estevan Point, reported the scene that occurred on June 20, 1942:
"The submarine surfaced about two miles offshore and was plainly visible. Shelling commenced at approximately 9:40 p.m. and continued for about 40 minutes. The first shells landed on the beach about 100 yards in front of the lighthouse. Mr. Lally, who was the light keeper at the time, immediately put out the light. The sub apparently then raised its sights, for from then on the shells went overhead. Approximately 25 shells were fired and, except for a few buildings hit by shell fragments, no damage was caused either to the lighthouse or radio station. With the exception of the men on shift, who tapped out word of the shelling to Pacific Command, all others gave a hand getting the women and children away from the settlement. The submarine pulled out on the surface and everyone could see and hear the diesel engines quite clearly. While naturally there was some nervousness, everyone, including the women and children, took the whole incident in their stride, then spent the following day souvenir hunting."

On April 9, 1942, American and Filipino troops cornered on Bataan Peninsula surrendered to the Japanese invaders. They were malnourished and weak, and the Japanese discovered there were many more of them than they anticipated. The soldiers were forced to walk 60+ miles to a POW camp. They suffered many atrocities along the way and the brutal treatment continued at the camp. Glenn Frazier was one of the Americans who survived the march and his time as a POW. The Ki-43 Hayabusa, a light, fast and maneuverable fighter that excelled in dogfighting and known to the Allies as Oscar, was the most important fighter of the Japanese Army Air Force. Often being mistaken for the Zero, it saw service on every front the Japanese fought in and production continued until August 1945. A total of 5,919 were produced, of which very few remain today.

Soon after the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, effectively placing over 100,000 West Coast residents of Japanese descent, the majority of them American citizens, into incarceration camps. Racism against Japanese Americans was rampant as much of the country grew more fearful and suspicious of collaboration with the Japanese government. But Japanese Americans were equally outraged at the attack on their country. Despite the growing racism against them, many Japanese Americans answered the call to war.

President Roosevelt activated the 442nd Regimental Combat Team on February 1, 1943, nearly one year after the signing of EO9066. Hawaiian-born Nisei (second-generation Japanese Americans) made up roughly two-thirds of the regiment, with the remaining third composed of Nisei from the mainland United States. The motto of the unit was “Go For Broke,” a phrase that meant putting everything on the line in an effort to win big. Just as other minority groups, Japanese Americans faced two wars during World War II—war against the Axis powers and war against racism back home—making “Go For Broke” an appropriate motto.

Many Americans are unaware that martial law was imposed in Hawaii immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor and lasted until late 1944. It was the longest enactment of martial law in American history and the treatment of Japanese Americans was particularly harsh. In 1946, the U.S. Supreme Court declared illegal the Army’s takeover of civilian government for much of the war and the military government’s prosecution of civilians in provost courts.
