There’s trulli no place like Alberobello! Dry-stoned in Apulian tradition, the remarkable and prehistoric houses are characterized by conical roofs and white-washed walls. Built without mortar, the trulli were designed as a strategic evasion of taxes imposed on new settlements. With the removal of one stone, the roofs of the charming dwellings would crumble. Actively used as homes and farmsteads, the UNESCO-protected structures can be found throughout the Valley d’Itria, featuring white symbols on the corbel roofs, an artistic flare of the 20th century. Would you visit this fairytale-esque destination?

Let’s explore! Tucked away at the foot of Mount Consolino, above Stilo, is a small square church, known as Calabria’s Cattolica di Stilo. Though humble in size, the church is the most notable representation of Byzantine architecture in Southern Italy. At the top of the cobblestone path, you will find a handsome view of the village and valley before entering to admire the vivid Byzantine frescoes, illuminated by the sunlight shining through the churches’ domes.

There’s no such thing as too much pasta and with over 300 different shapes of the versatile carb, it’s no wonder why Italians are the pasta masters. Long live pasta!

Hanging on by a cliff in the northern region of Lazio is Italy’s enchanted and “dying city,” Civita di Bagnoregio. Its name is attributed not to its estimated 13 inhabitants, but to the progressive erosion that reduces its land surface by about 7 centimeters per year. Accessible only by pedestrian bridge, wandering through the city is the best way to admire the panoramic countryside views of the striking geological formations shaped by the elements. Take a walk on the wild side and enjoy the striking countryside designed by wind and rainfall!

At first glance, the Sicilian Baroque-style churches, and milky-white stone houses of Modica seem far removed from Mesoamerican influence. But Modica and the ancient Aztec empire are linked by chocolate. The Cacao bean was introduced to Sicily in the 16th century by the Spanish, who used ancient Aztec techniques and added sugar. Today, Modica Chocolate is globally recognized and is the first European chocolate to obtain Protected Geographical Indication status.

In Italy, every moment can be enriched with a cup of coffee! Unless, of course, you are about to enjoy a meal, in which case you may opt for an espresso afterward - without milk like a true Italian. More than a beverage picked up via drive-thru and consumed from a to-go cup on an errand run, coffee is a symbol of hospitality and unification. Bonding over “un caffè,” is typically done over conversation and between sips from ceramic or glass cups. If it needs to be rushed, it will be done by standing at the counter and drinking the coffee in two sips. Most importantly, an Italian never stands in the way of another’s coffee cup! Next time you venture to Italy, be sure to take the time to enjoy your cup of coffee like a true Italian.

Perfect for frosty winter days, Polenta Taragna is undoubtedly our favorite version of polenta. This irresistible buttery mix of yellow cornmeal and buckwheat, typical of the mountainous Lombardy region, is a heavenly dish which can be enjoyed on its own, mixed with local cheeses, and topped with savory meats. Our mouths are watering over this hearty meal and we can't help but wonder - how do you like your polenta? Have you tried it?

Life is like a book. There are good chapters and there are bad chapters, but there are also sequels. Carlino’s 60-year-old fishing boat has a new life as a romantic cliffside BookCrossing, welcoming visitors to “take a book, leave a book.” The repurposed vessel boasts a beautifully written invitation atop: “The fishing was profitable, the oars became wings and the sea was colored by the moon. Stop, drop anchor here.” The gozzo poetically reminds us to, “read, breathe, love.”

The city of Mantova, seems to rise out of the water as it pierces the northern Italian skyline with ancient towers, domes, and turrets. The ancient city of the Lombardy region is known amongst locals as La Bella Addormentata, the sleeping beauty, and is strategically protected by three artificial lakes over a millennia old. Untouched by urban development and tourist crowds, you can quickly discover the grandiose Ducale and Tea Palaces, many fashion boutiques, lively bars, cobblestone town squares, and eccentric osterias. A stunning Prosecco winegrowing landscape located in northeastern Italy, flawlessly blends historical and current land use practices. Known as the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, the peculiar morphological ridge system was inscribed as a cultural site on UNESCO's World Heritage List (2019). The 17th-century terracing methods create unique vertical slopes that when coupled with 19th-century parallel vine training techniques, result in the world-famous checkerboard pattern. A winelover's dream destination, it offers the perfect setting for tasting the one and only, prosecco, produced in this unique Italian region for the entire world to savor.

For many, Sundays are typically a day of rest and devotion. But nothing quite compares to the Italian time-honored tradition of 'la passeggiata'. The joyous laugh of a child running by wakes the sleepy town from its blissful afternoon slumber and the festivities soon begin. The daily sociocultural ritual involves a leisurely stroll along picturesque town squares and lively streets as the locals engage in friendly conversation and people-watching for a relaxing time. As merchants re-open for business, the rattling shop gates summon pedestrians from the now buzzing streets. Passeggiate are enjoyed traditionally every day but most popularly on Sundays, when the entire family or groups of friends can join in to decompress.

Sunny with a chance of Truffle!
For centuries, truffle has maintained their status as one of the world’s most sought-after delicacies. In fact, Italy host a number of festivals dedicated to experiencing the variety of truffles and the many ways they can enjoyed. They should never be cooked, instead grated onto just about any food. As part of the mushroom family, they grow and mature just below the ground or right at the surface. The best way to dig these treasures up is with a well-trained dog as they are easer to train and have an incredible precision compare to pigs. In 2021, truffle hunting was reconized by UNESCO as one of the world’s intangible cultural traditions.
