Remembering Miami icon Marjory Stoneman Douglas on the anniversary of her passing on this day (May 14), in 1998. As a journalist, writer, feminist, and environmentalist who spent most of her adult life in Miami, she was a staunch defender of the everglades by opposing drainage in the interest of land development. She lived a full life until the age of 108.

in 1928, the Tamiami Trail opened to the public, finally connecting South Florida to Tampa! The highway starts at State Road 60 in Tampa, runs along the Big Cypress National Preserve, intersects with Naples, cuts through the Everglades, and ends up at U.S. Route 1 in Miami.

Opening ceremonies took place April 25, 1928, but to commemorate the public opening, about 500 cars drove in a caravan/motorcade from Tampa to Miami, shown below!

I loved this family from London. I was dreading the day because they were starting at the Boca Raton resort so it was a long drive for pick up/drop off. It turned out to be one of my favorite tours! I’m so pleased with this review and that they enjoyed it so much too.

I had such a great day on tour today with executives from Universal Music Group, The man in the black shirt is the Chief Information Officer. He was kind enough to let me ask many questions about the music industry, show him a video of my nephew and his band (he said they were great!) and explain some mysteries about Google algorithms. They were all so down to earth, complimentary and grateful for my tour. He is not the first high level executive I have taken out on StellaR Miami Tours, LLC, and I’m proud to say they always are so appreciative for my efforts. I am so grateful and honored to give these tours.

Happy Birthday Marjory Stoneman Douglas!

Born on April 7, 1890, she is affectionately known as the “Mother of the Everglades.” Douglas lived to be 108 years old and dedicated her life to preserving and restoring this special place.

Today, 1.3 million acres of Everglades National Park are set aside as the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness to recognize her importance and monumental work!
