In 2012, she teamed forces with another amazing doula and friend, Aubrey, in order to ensure each family that they know EXACTLY who could attend their birth. Jonna and Aubrey both recognize the differences in each family and seek to honor and protect those differences during the labor process. Jonnay and Aubrey also believe that birth is a natural process and should not be feared but kept sacred.
Women have been helping other women birth since the dawn of time, so they view their doula practice as a beautiful extension of this historical work. Jonna and Aubrey also trust in each woman’s maternal instincts: most women establish sacred “ritual patterns” during labor to get them from surge to baby; they also do so instinctually (Gaskin, 1993). Jonna and Aubrey see their job, then, as a tour guide through these rituals. They don't create the experience for women but help guide them along through their journey. Jonna and Aubrey also love to travel and view each new birth as a new cultural adventure! Such a pleasure and honor to join this hilarious and amazing couple again as they welcomed their surprise baby boy into the world early this morning. Mama dug DEEP for strength and courage (as we all do) and reminded me, once again, that maternal energy is unstoppable. Thank you for this inspiration as I prepare to bring my third in to the world too. Big hugs and love!!
A beautiful and BIG baby boy (10 lbs 14 ozs!) was brought into this world last night by a warrior of a mama who was determined to have a different birth story to share with her second son...and she did it!!! So happy for this wonderful family. :) Congrats!!
There is nothing more powerful and beautiful than motherhood. The last thing I want to do is be controversial, so please take this for what it is, let us there is nothing worse than a mother that is judged for feeding her hungry child in public. I'm so proud of this cover and what it's stands for. I obviously don't look like this or wear while I am breastfeeding but this stands for all women out there, whether you breastfeed or not, we gave birth, we are women, we are mothers. Thank you to ELLE for being so bold and making such an encouraging, positive and healthy statement.
FYI -- Enlightened Mama is now offering YOGA!!!! I just bought my class pass and you should too! Then you can all come over to my house afterward for a cup of tea or wine...cause Enlightened Mama is literally a minute away from where I live. :)

It's World Doula Week!, so I am reminded of my beautiful births and the doulas, Dawn and Aubrey, who helped bring my miraculous babies into this world. I will never forget seeing their smiling, supportive faces while in active labor. Both women brought me such comfort -- their presence alone wrapped me in strength, giving me the gumption I needed to push my babies out (a feat I did NOT want to do, both times :)). I love you both and will forever be indebted to your services! Thank you!!!
Both of my girls were breastfed, and both of them only drank 4oz bottles until they weaned at 13mos. Granted, Raina ate more frequently, but I was always amazed that their intake per sitting never changed as they aged. Then I read this by Dr. Jones: "Breastfed babies, unlike formula-fed babies, need the same amount of milk/day as they do when they're 1mo old. At 1mo, a baby has established how much breast milk s/he'll need so you don't need to keep increasing the amount. Many docs, however, still suggest that you do because they're applying the formula-fed rules to breastfed babies." So interesting! Keep this in mind mamas, especially those of you pumping at work: don't work harder than you have to!
Beautiful baby boy born yesterday to a fierce mama who labored for only a short two hours! This little boy undoubtedly will be spunky too.....he's got red hair!! :)
We are very excited to announce Dr. Hartung, MD is joining the Health Foundations Family Health & Birth Center Team! We are adding the option of hospital deliveries at United Hospital in St. Paul where he will be attending deliveries (both low and high risk). He will also be providing Women's Health Services at The Center! This also means if you are a HFBC mama who plans to deliver at the birth center, but are no longer considered low risk, you will still be able to stay in our practice but deliver in the hospital and with a care team you know! Please call the office at 651.895.2520 if you would like to schedule an appointment with Dr. Hartung! We are scheduling him for January 2015 and beyond! AND of course we will continue to offer an exceptional level of personal attention and care from our Midwives in a comfortable, home-like environment of the Birth Center!
Twas the morning before Christmas and all through the hospital, TWIN girls were born without any trouble at all. Mama labored with grace and pushed TWO out with ease, Baby A was head down while Baby B was a breech! Merry Christmas new family of four....you did it!!!!! :)
