The Dakota

The Dakota is the granddaddy of all luxury apartments in New York City. It might not be as large or as imposing as its neighbors along Central Park West, but when it was designed in 1884 by architect Henry Hardenbergh, it was the only thing around. At the time, most wealthy New Yorkers lived in townhouses or mansions, mostly below 59th street. The idea of living luxuriously in an apartment had yet to come around. The super tall glass skinny towers popping up all over Manhattan owe their existence to this building.
The name comes from typical New York snark. When Edward S. Clark, the heir to the Singer Sewing Machine fortune, commissioned the building's construction, it is rumored that his friends said that had he built it a few blocks north and west, he could have built it in the Dakotas. The other story is that Clark liked the name of the two new states and wanted his building named after that.
The Dakota also has an infamous past, John Lennon was a resident here, and his murder occurred just outside its gates. It was landmarked by The City of New York on February 11, 1969.
