These adventurous males return around the first week of August after the breeding season. Check them out at Port Dock One, voted Newport’s top free tourist attraction, open 24/7! These powerful waves come without warning, and have the ability to knock unsuspecting people off their feet. Newport High School seeks volunteer community mentors to assist students with navigating the many possibilities for education and careers beyond high school.
ASPIRE mentors guide students to explore vocational and college options, as well as potential career paths. Volunteers may also assist students with admission applications, applying for scholarships and for financial aid. As of Tuesday, 23 NHS students were enrolled in ASPIRE, with nearly 40 more on a waiting list to get into the program.

We love the Yaquina Head Lighthouse! So much to do and see!!!
“What is there to do at the park?”
It’s a question we get often; and the answer is: a lot!! Seeing the lighthouse is only one of many sights available here at Yaquina Head, and you don’t want to miss out on any of them. The next time you visit, check out these locations:
-The Interpretive Center: Your one-stop-shop for information! Talk to a ranger at the front desk before walking through the Exhibit Hall to learn about the natural and historical resources of the park.
-The Tidepools: Located at Cobble Beach, this protected "marine garden" is filled with anemones, sea stars, urchins, and more! Chat with a ranger on your way down the stairs for some tips and tricks for traversing this slippery yet exciting habitat.
-Cobble Beach: Even if you don’t visit the park during low tide, Cobble Beach is still a unique place to see. Listen closely as the waves wash over the cobbles, creating its very own “rock and roll” music.
-Quarry Cove: This protected cove is the perfect place to relax, dig your toes into the sand, and watch for seals.
-Salal Hill Trail and Communications Hill Trail: Both hikes are about a mile long and give you incredible views of the surrounding ocean.
Yaquina Head may be a small park, but it by no means lacks in wildlife. Look out for whales, seals, sea birds, and more!
