First up on our alumni spotlights is Peter Wang Hjemdahl, co-founder of rePurpose and winner of the 2019 President's Engagement Prize. We're really proud of what Peter has accomplished and grateful that he visits to inspire our members!

Q: How has PennSEM helped you choose your career?

A: I am pursuing my own social enterprise because of it! When we first got to Wharton, there were only 2 paths to success - banking or consulting. Despite pressures to pursue these jobs from all around us, we crafted our own paths and found a shared calling in social entrepreneurship.

rePurpose (https://repurpose.global) is start-up company that boosts incomes and increases recycling rates in developing countries. It is currently located in Mumbai, India.

Q: What has been your favorite memory in PennSEM?

A: I really enjoyed traveling to the client site with the team. We were working with Shiftspace, a environmentally sustainable urban design studio, which was a very unique learning opportunity. It was great seeing what a lean, fast-moving startup environment looked like.

Coleman Social Impact Series: Nena Stoiljkovic, VP, World Bank We have a really cool event at 3 pm today at the Colonial Penn Center Auditorium, so definitely stop by!

The Penn Social Entrepreneurship Movement (PennSEM) was founded with the intention of making Penn a leading educator in social enterprise. Since then, the club has expanded to include a Fellows program (in conjunction with the national Compass Fellowship program), Think Tank, Consulting, and Events & Trips. From teaching students more about social entrepreneurship through discussions and immersion trips, to helping to give students the opportunity to explore research in the field and even start their own social impact initiatives, PennSEM endeavors to foster a tightly knit community of future social enterprise leaders, advocates and supporters.

Our next spotlight is with our consulting co-chair Suriya Sharma! She's a senior in Wharton studying Business Analytics and Behavioral Economics.

This past summer she was working at Boston Consulting Group in Houston, Texas.

Suriya's favorite PennSEM memory is making Oreo balls with her family group (a fun PennSEM tradition)!

Her favorite restaurant on campus is Hai Street Kitchen, so for all of you who haven't been there, definitely check it out!

To kick off our Summer Spotlight we have sophomore Victoria Meng studying Marketing and Behavioral Economics in Wharton.

PennSEM Memories: Last year she was a part of Compass Fellows, the only all-freshman committee within PennSEM. Her favorite memory was when she was developing her idea for a social-impact company. She loved the first time she was welding together jewelry developing her products, even though a fire alarm may have been involved

Summer Plans: Through her internship this summer she has learned that working at an ad agency is nothing like Mad Men.

Favorite Restaurant: She recommends that you check out coZara, as it's her favorite restaurant on campus.
