I have mentioned my mentor Marita many times to my students and colleagues. As I started teaching piano 25 years ago, I sought out a mentor with 70 years of experience, and Marita became my friend. Marita was acquainted with American composer Amy Beach (1867-1944) ; as a child, she accompanied her aunt, who was an assistant to the composer, to Beach's home many times. Marita taught piano until just a few years ago; she passed away last week, at age 110.

Miss Marita Carlton Gould,110, of South Portland, passed away on May 21, 2024 in Bedford, NH. She was born in Portland, Maine on January 18, 1914, daughter to the late Jennie Carlton and James Gould.
