UPDATE: As of 8 PM, pressure now down to 897 mb with winds of 180 mph inside Category 5 Hurricane . It is now the 5th most intense Atlantic hurricane on record. Lower the pressure, the stronger the storm. Only 6 storms have ever dropped below 900 mb in the Atlantic...Milton is the latest. Its eye is also incredibly small...only 4 miles wide in diameter. The Hurricane Hunters flew by it in under 30 seconds.

WHOA 😳 EVEN STRONGER: Hurricane Milton continues to get even stronger this afternoon. The storm now has sustained winds at a staggering 175mph with gusts up to 190mph.

Hurricane Rita reached 180mph in the Gulf of Mexico in 2005. Pressure is continuing to drop as the storm strengthens.

Only three hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico have had lower pressure than Milton's current reading. That would be hurricanes Allen, Rita and Katrina

Florida is known for its abundance and diversity of birds — and also for its vulnerability to hurricanes. So, when there’s a looming threat of a major storm, where do all the birds go? Birds of all kinds exhibit different strategies to prepare themselves for an incoming storm, explained SCCF Sho...

The estimates for storm surge were just released. 4 to 7 feet for coastal Collier. 5 to 10 feet for coastal Lee and Charlotte. 8 to 12 feet for Sarasota to Tampa Bay. Remember this is based off the current forecast and subject to change. Also, to put things into perspective Helene surge was 2 to 4 feet for Charlotte and Lee. If you got water in Helene you will get water again. Ian’s storm surge was 10-15 feet. As we know here in SWFL,this surge will be catastrophic for our coastal communities, especially with many of them still cleaning up from Helene and without beach dunes and fewer mangroves that protected them pre-Helene. If you live along coast you need to leave. This is a life or death situation. Mandatory evacuations will be issued today, some were issued yesterday including FMB and Charlotte County Barrier Islands. Zone A and possibly zone B will be likely told to evacuate today.

We are going to pray that this storm weakens! 🙏🌀❤️‍🩹 We now have Tropical Storm Milton with winds of 40 mph. Remember, the NHC tracks update every 6 hours. (5pm, 11pm, 5am and 11am) One other important reminder…The cone you see is not manipulated or moved by the NHC based on expected track of the storm. It has NOTHING to do with the actual storm forecast. It is merely the average margin of error on a track by the NHC over the past 5 years. If the average error is 150 miles on Day 5 (It is), that's how far the cone extends from the forecast center of the storm. Most models are showing if there were to be a change in track, it would be South, not North.

HURRICANE IAN 2 YEARS AGO TODAY: A day we will never forget and hope to never see again in our lifetime. Ian is the worst natural disaster in Southwest Florida history and most destructive local hurricane on record with 15 feet of storm surge, 27" of rain and wind gusts of 150+ mph. The slow-moving storm lasted hours, but changed lives in seconds. Although we are cleaning up right now from surge after Hurricane Helene, we have come a long way since Ian and Southwest Florida continues to get stronger. The Road to Repairadise just got a little bit longer and bumpier, but we aren’t going anywhere.

Good morning, Currently the causeway is closed for assessment and clearing of debris with reports suggesting opening up access around noon. Many roads on the island continue to be impassible due to flooding. Standing water throughout the island. Overnight the storm surge reached approximate levels up to 5 feet in certain areas. LCEC is continuing to restore power to the islands. We are all aggravated, disappointed and tired, tired of the cleanup and yet here we go again. Sanibel residences are resilient, strong, and so grateful to be living on Sanibel Island it’s such a beautiful place. This too shall pass.

The water is rising fast.
