“Here lyeth Theodora Ash,” meet Damsels and Divas – Theodora Ash Tours, LLC

Colonial Park Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia, is a historic park-like graveyard that served as the primary public cemetery from 1750 to 1853. Found within the hallowed grounds of the local attraction that appeals to both Savannah residents and tourists alike lies the grave of Theodora Ash.

Theodora Ash was a young woman born in 1752 and died at the early age of seventeen in February of 1770. She is the first woman to have an epigraph – an inscription on a building statue or coin – in Colonial Park Cemetery. The epigraph on her gravestone was put there by her husband, who hoped to immortalize her, with the following inscription:

“Here lyeth the body of Theodora Ash who departed this life February the 17th A.D. 1770 aged 17 Years. If innocence or virtue could save a liveing mortall from the grave, Theodora thou had'n never died.”

The gravestone itself features floral embellishments, a depiction of Theodora Ash with her head tilted to the left and leaning on her hand encased in the curve of the Grim Reaper’s Scythe.

Theodora was the daughter of Cato Ash and Sarah Odingsell, who had two other children - Richard Russel Ash and Mary Ash - all of whom originated in South Carolina. There are no other historical accounts of Theodora or her family, making Ash's death one that is shrouded in mystery, as no one knows why she ended up in the Colony of Savannah or how she died.

Carry Smith, Owner of Damsels and Divas – Theodora Ash Tours, LLC, believes the mystery surrounding Theodora Ash is fascinating and wants to get the conversations on her started.

“She was the first woman to have an epigraph immortalizing her by her husband on a headstone in Colonial Park cemetery. We want to uncover the connections to her mystery,” said Carry Smith.

Troup Square is a local's favorite square, with its Armillary Sphere. These uniquely designed spheres were invented by the ancient Greeks and used to track celestial orbits, equinoxes, and solstices. This Armillary Sphere statue was designed in 1968 with zodiac signs around the sphere and six turtles at the base. Savannah's signature sphere also functions as a sundial.
