A UN body called the International Seabed Authority (ISA) is responsible for governing and protecting the deep seabed on behalf of humankind as a whole. In practice, the ISA Secretariat routinely prioritizes the interests of pro-mining governments and companies over the protection of our fragile ecosystems. Since 2001, the ISA has granted 31 exploration licenses for contractors to explore for minerals beyond national jurisdiction in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Take a stand to stop deep-sea mining.

Sign the urgent public letter to stop deep-sea mining before it destroys ocean life.

Today, nearly half the planet is unprotected and vulnerable to exploitation. Human-related threats include unsustainable and illegal fishing, shipping traffic, noise pollution, seabed mining, plastic and chemical pollution, and acidifying and warming waters as a result of the climate crisis.

Today, nearly half the planet remains unprotected and vulnerable to exploitation. Add your name to urge world leaders to take action and secure a strong High Seas Treaty to protect the Great Ocean Commons.

With profound sadness, the Center for Whale Research announces the passing of our beloved founder and longtime leader Kenneth C. Balcomb.

Ken’s family and loved ones surrounded him in his final hours on December 15, 2022. He was 82 years old.

Ken was a pioneer and legend in the whale world. But more importantly, he was the North Star, a guiding light. Over half a century of whale research and advocacy, he lit a path for tens of thousands to follow. He was a scientist with a deep-rooted love and connection to the whales and their ocean habitat. He inspired others to appreciate both as much as he did.

Second Thresher Shark in less than three weeks washes up on the Long Beach Peninsula near Ocean Park… 🤔

08/15/2022

On August 13, we received a text from Mark Malleson (CWR Field Biologist) saying he, Joe, and Tasli were having an "epic" encounter with J, K, and L pods. Encounter #49 started along the south shore of Vancouver Island, and Mark and his crew spent the next five plus hours with most J, K, and L pod members. The water was calm, and the day was warm: an ideal combination to photo-document orcas from a research vessel.
Little did the Center for Whale Research know that the endangered population of whales was heading toward a potentially life-threatening situation: a fuel spill. A commercial fishing boat had sunk off the west side of San Juan Island near CWR's research offices. The 49-foot fishing vessel sunk carrying approximately 2,600 gallons of diesel oil. The Southern Residents had left the spill area, averting this disastrous situation.
The following morning, Mark Malleson was on board the MV Coho ferry en route from Victoria to Port Angeles and saw at least 30 Southern Resident orcas swimming westward in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We are confident all of the 60-plus whales seen during Encounter #49 avoided the fuel spill.
See the "epic" photographs and video from Encounter #49. https://www.whaleresearch.com/2022-49

My Story

I grew up sitting on the shores of the Oregon Coast with my mom - waiting for the whale spout to show itself while we squealed with excitement at the site of them. This is where my love of the ocean and everything in it began. Over the years I've grown to love everything and anything that has to do with water - swimming, canoeing, boating, sailing and then snorkeling... Once I dipped my head below the surface and saw everything below - it became a necessity to get deeper - and explore everything I possibly could. In 2009 I took scuba lessons, and since then have devoted as much time as possible to creating new adventures below the water. It is my passion to share this with others, these experiences, this is why I create trips to take people to other countries and share the culture above the surface as well as the amazing world below.

Our conservation efforts include doing everything we can on a small scale, not only at home, but with each adventure we take. Our day to day activities affect our oceans, and it is important to save our oceans. We do not realize the impact we have in our every day lives. We are all connected and without our oceans - we will all simply cease to exist.
