Sea Spirit is getting a remodel of the master bathroom and some other updates that I know everyone vacationing at the house will enjoy!! Season starts Memorial Day weekend and everything will be all set!!

The beach, Black Pelican, Goombay's, Hurricane Mo's, movies, shopping, dancing, and good old relaxing are all ready and waiting for you!!

Dear Beach Lovers,
I am very excited to share with you some news about Southern Shores, NC - many of the town residents and the town council members have been working with NCDOT and others to change the speed limit on NC 12 North through Southern Shores, and it has now happened!! Southern Shores is a beach town, residential in nature with lots of vacationers and year-round residents who cross NC 12 to get to the beach.

May - September the speed limit has been 35 mph; however, from October - April the speed limit jumped to 45 mph.

In August the town council unanimously voted to make the speed limit through this great town 35 MPH year round. This change is a great win for the year-round residents and vacationers!!!

Thank you Town Council Members for doing the right thing, putting SAFETY FIRST!!

......and the day begins. I am here in Southern Shores, a beautiful slice of heaven in the world, and yes things have changed so much since 1981 when I first started coming to OBX, big houses that block the view replaced the quintessential mid-century flat tops and modest beach cottages, traffic has increased, and large developers scoop up whatever free space there is, but regardless of all that I am thankful for my slice, a modest beach cottage, just 60 yards from the shoreline and all the beauty as far as the eye can see. Enjoy the day!

History.....OBX Style!!!

The first bridge across Oregon Inlet wasn't built until 1963. Prior to that time, anyone who wanted to get between Hatteras Island and the northern beaches, Roanoke Island, or the mainland had to do so by ferry. Those without cars often made use of the Manteo-Hatteras Bus Line, founded by Stockton Midgett in 1938 and operated by his sons Harold, Anderson, and "Stocky," all of whom were under the age of 18 at the time. A round trip ticket was about $2.50. This photo by Aycock Brown shows a packed bus picking up travelers at the Hatteras Island Post Office in 1942.
