The sun is shining and we’re still on for this evening’s cleanup! These heavy rain events tend to wash a lot of debris into the water, so we’ve got some work to do! If you need equipment please arrive at the shop between 5pm-5:30pm, or meet us at Soundside Park at 6! See y’all there 💕

REMINDER: Come join your Estuary friends next Sunday for a roadside cleanup, celebrating the start of National Estuaries Week. Rt. 17 has been mowed and exposed all the litter than could make its way into our healthy estuaries. We'll meet up at Kimbel Lodge at Hobcaw Barony at 7:00AM and deploy multi-person teams to specific stretches along Rt. 17 between Hog Heaven and the bridges to Georgetown. We should be finished up by 9:00AM. Grabbers, safety vests, bags and roadside safety signs will be provided, and we will get you started with a donut and a smile! Please register at the link below so we know how many supplies we will need. Your consideration is appreciated! See you out there!

“These important ecosystems are disappearing due to development and climate change, and over the last decade, the U.S. has led the world in rates of salt marsh loss.”

From Maine to Florida, valuable salt marsh ecosystems buffer coastal communities from flooding, provide critical habitat to birds, fish and other wildlife, and support a robust commercial and recreational industry.

These important ecosystems are disappearing due to development and climate change, and over the last decade, the U.S. has led the world in rates of salt marsh loss. To help bring back this ecosystem, Interior launched the Salt Marsh Keystone Initiative.

This initiative aims to build relationships across federal, Tribal, state and local governments and partners along the Atlantic Coast to restore and enhance salt marshes to protect the people, fish and wildlife that depend on them.https://doi.gov/sites/doi.gov/files/salt-marsh-fact-sheet.pdf

North Carolina is home to around 220,000 acres of salt marsh! These incredible ecosystems are vital to the global health of our oceans. Salt marshes are marine nurseries that provide food and habitat for over 75% of our coastal fisheries species. They also help protect our coastal communities against flooding, improve our water quality, and trap carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. Our salt marshes have sustained us culturally and economically for as long as people have lived on our coasts. Y’all come on out and help us keep these waters clean, learn a little bit, or just relax and enjoy the view. We’d love to show you around the little corner of the Carolinas we call home.

Alright y’all, it’s that time again! It’s been a busy summer and there’s a lot to clean up. Wednesday September 18th (weather permitting) we’ll be hosting a paddle cleanup in the ICW, and we’ll take all the help we can get! Bring your paddle boards, kayaks, or come grab a $5 rental (first come, first served). If you’re a new paddler, we’ll have instructors on site for anyone that may need a little help. All ages and skill levels are welcome! If you need equipment stop by the shop no later than 5:30pm, or just meet us directly at Soundside Park at 6pm. We’ll see y’all on the water!
