Meet Captain Stephen! 😁 Stephen joined us as a Captain this year. He was born and raised on the water of West Michigan, living on a houseboat for 6 months of the year. Looking for something more adventurous moved to the Florida Keys for a Scuba Instructor internship. Once finished with the internship moved onto a liveaboard sailboat in Exuma, Bahamas running week-long dive trips. After two years on a charter boat moved to the commercial side, running an Offshore Supply Ship in the Gulf of Mexico. Stephen says “I’m excited to spend the summer exploring Prince William Sound. When not working I can be found underwater with a camera in my hands!”

Meet Captain Michelle Lang! 👋 Michelle grew up in Southern California but her love for the ocean began on her first boat job in Australia 9 years ago. After two years of working on boats on the Great Barrier Reef, she decided to move up to Alaska and has called it home ever since. For the last 6 years, she has spent the cold summers in , , and and then migrated to the warmer waters of Hawaii to sail with the humpback whales 🐋 ! She has also spent winters on sailboats in Key West, Portugal, and New Zealand. Out of all the places she has worked, Alaska has been her favorite: “I am always excited to come back and show people why I love to call it home.”

Kelly and Mike Bender own and operate Lazy Otter Charters Inc./Lazy Otter Cafe & Gifts, offering custom sightseeing and water taxi service in Prince William Sound out of Whittier. 2024 is their 30th anniversary of Lazy Otter Charters! Mike and Kelly met in Whittier and raised their three kids on Prince William Sound. They are passionate about protecting the wilderness they value for future generations, serving as board members with Prince William Sound Regional Citizens Advisory Council and the Prince William Sound Stewardship Foundation.

From Kelly: "We value our ATIA membership for many reasons, particularly the resources for small businesses, and the marketing options that meet our budget. We really appreciate Convention and the opportunity to network, connect with other operators on trends, and participate in the annual membership meeting. I am especially proud of the ATIA Foundation and the amount of money given every year in scholarships and the energy the Foundation has committed to put in to professional development - which will have immediate impact on our industry. It is one of my greatest pleasures to sit on the foundation board."

Meet Dylan! 👋 👋 👋 If you are a friend of Lazy Otter, you know Dylan 😊. Dylan was born and raised in Alaska and in Lazy Otter Charters. The youngest of the Bender Family, Dylan was practically born on a boat in Prince William Sound and has grown up working with his siblings and parents in the family business. When Dylan is not in college at the calmaritime he is in Whittier helping his Dad with everything a marine business could need.
