The Insect Killing Festival in Hoi An

Taking place each year on Lunar May 5th, the Doan Ngo Festival is a longstanding custom in Vietnam. The festival's roots go back to China, from where it spread to many countries in Asia, including Vietnam. Here, the festival was adapted to the local culture and became known as the “Insect Killing Festival”.

In an attempt to protect their crops from insects and disease, farmers set up simple altars at home. The sacrifice ceremony is usually performed during the "Horse’s Hour" – between 11am to 1pm, with the meal taking place at noon, hence the festival's name: Doan Ngo (Midday Festival).

The hot, changeable weather of Lunar May is thought to be unhealthy and ripe for diseases and stomach upsets. Foods offered during the festival must aid digestion and release body heat. Rice tubes with molasses and bowls of sticky rice soaked in spirits are popular offerings on this day. Fruit like plums, peaches, lycheesd, mangoes and watermelon may also be offered.

Ash cakes (rice tubes with molasses) are popular treats during the festival. They are either tiny and elongated or triangle-tipped and may have sweet or salty fillings. Sticky rice soaked in spirits is another dish associated with this event, as it is said to "kill insects". This pudding is sweet, cool and mildly spicy.

Let’s explore how local people sell and buy for this event in Hoi An market. Tell us what’s your favorite photo.

Hoi An stands 40/46 in the list for thr most beautiful streets in the world.

"Not all streets are created equal. Take the colorful Caminito that anchors Buenos Aires’s La Boca neighborhood: It not only provides visitors with a vibrant photo op but also serves as a reminder of how the neighborhood was built in the 19th century. Streets, however, don’t have to offer a history lesson or be rendered in Technicolor to be charming. Some are notable for their stunning natural features, such as the cherry blossom tunnel in Bonn, Germany, which makes an appearance for a few short weeks every spring. Here, AD surveys 46 of the most beautiful streets in the world."

THE HOI AN FOOD SAFARI STORY

Hoi An Food Safari is a relatively new business, being established in 2014 so travellers could participate in a safe local food experience whilst exploring the streets of Hoi An. Word of mouth quickly spread about us and then friends of previous customers also wanted to participate on a personalised tour experiencing the delights of typical Hoi An cuisine. The best way to experience a culture is through its food. The food we eat also tells us a lot about who we are. It sheds light on values that are important to a culture, and reveals the perspectives and way of life of its people. Therefore, our aim is that our small group and personalised tours, led by local guides, are run in a professional, socially responsible and sustainable way to what you would expect of a western standard business. We also take pride at offering a truly wonderful experience not only to visitors of Hoi An and its surrounds, but also with our tour groups interaction with locals who we have all become part of the bigger Safari Family! Unique sights, sounds, smells and foods that some of the reasons why people travel. Things are moving so fast in Vietnam and with tourism exploding as it becomes a popular travel destination, unique food offerings are also changing to cater for western tastes. Original street vendors are quietly disappearing as tourists eat fusion Vietnamese thinking this is the real thing. Likewise, sadly the younger locals start to eat more and more western foods like burgers and pizza! Street vendors see the changes and they realise that they can make more money doing other things. This is why we believe in working with these remaining street vendors to keep the street foods, traditions and local cultures alive. We pay higher prices for these street foods as an incentive for the vendors and hopefully making it a little more financially viable to keep operating in the more traditional ways. We look forward in meeting you and showing you a fantastic side of Vietnam and particularly Hoi An that we are sure will go down as a highlight of your travels!
