Conwy Castle was part of string of fortifications built along the welsh coastline after the invasion of Wales by King Edward I. After withstanding several sieges it eventually feel into ruin and became an attractive destination for painters. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site for Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd, the castle marks the pinnacle of 13th century architecture.

The name ‘Peak District’ does not relate to mountains (there are none). Instead the ‘peak’ is thought to derive from the Pecsaetan, an Anglo-Saxon tribe who settled the area.

Below is a work by LS Lowry. Known in his lifetime as the people's painter, he grew famous through his depictions of urban life and his characteristic ‘matchstick’ style people.

'Going to Work' painted in 1943 shows the mass of people setting out on their daily journey to the local stainless steel factory in Newton Heath in Greater Manchester.

Kendal Mint Cake - the iconic Cumbrian sweet made from sugar water and peppermint oil. This simple confectionary was invented by accident when a batch of peppermint creams went wrong. Sir Edmund Hilary’s expedition took and Kendal mint cake in their supplies on the first successful ascent of Everest in 1953.

The ruins of the Benedictine Abbey of St Benet's on the River Bure, in the Norfolk Broads. A monastic centre during the medieval age until the dissolution of the monasteries. The ruins then became a source of inspiration for romantic painters such as John Sell Cotman who painted this watercolour in 1831.

The market town of Bakewell has a history dating back to the medieval ages and beyond. The town is famous for its pudding, which consists of a flaky pastry base, a jam filling and an almond custard filling. Said to be invented by a lucky mistake by an 18th century cook.
