Sharing a few slides from an extraordinary encounter with the Himba womenfolk & their families at a miniscule village in the Marienfluss Conservancy.

Wilderness Serra Cafema has ensured excellent relationships with these local Himba villages & regular guest visits there exemplify sensitive, mutually beneficial cultural tourism.

Some of the direct benefits for the Himba include the building & ongoing support of the Marienfluss School, the first school in the conservancy with Grades 0 to 7, & a conservancy clinic. Wilderness also delivers fresh water to the nearby villages three times a week, plus supports in various other ways.

One of the things I loved about this Namibian trip was the good conversation. At mealtimes, on nature drives, in the safari vehicle, on walks. The rolling chit chat was a delight.

Having wifi relegated to specific areas in camp came with great rewards. No gadgets running interference or screens demanding attention. A win.

A gorgeous stay! An extraordinary few hours spent with Robert Matombé, affectionately known as the ‘turtle manager’. Just as it is at Ephelia, the natural environment at Constance Lemuria is front of mind.

Aside from his dedication to the turtles that nest & breed on the pristine Anse Kerlan beach at Lemuria, he is also part of various educational outreach programmes to schools in Praslin, creating ongoing awareness about nature & biodiversity, while craftily grooming the eco warriors & ‘marine biologists of the future’, he says.

Capetonian Joseph Mocke (pictured at left with Robert) is the Environmental & Sustainability Manager at Lemuria. An innovator who works closely with Robert, he is also continually driving new projects that perpetuate the Constance green ethos & ensure minimal eco impact across the property.

I almost missed it- World Elephant Day! This was taken at in northern Thailand, the sanctuary run by - if you go to Thailand add it into your itinerary.

Remember- never ride an elephant or support any form of entertainment or sport that uses animals (monkeys, elephants etc). Just don’t do it.
