WHY WE LOVE HYENAS... There's a common-held myth that hyenas are just scavengers, stealing hard-won kills from Africa's big cats. Nothing could be further from the truth. These intelligent mammals are skilled predators and more often than not bring down their own prey. If you sit outside at eKhaya Bush Villa at night, drink in hand, admiring the star-spangled heavens above, you'll sometimes hear their haunting call as they stalk the wilderness of Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate.

WHAT YOU CAN SEE AT EKHAYA VILLA... We've got plenty of giraffe here on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate. Did you know that a giraffe's "horns" are not horns at all but bony protuberances called "ossicones" which are made from ossified cartilage rather than living bone? Giraffe bulls like this one have larger, thicker ossicones with bald spots on top. Females have more slender ossicones which have tufty, furry tops. It's an easy way to tell them apart!
