‘Behind the Photo – stalking lioness’ - Chad Cocking

"You folks are used to seeing my images here on Tanda Tula’s social media pages, but I don’t often go into the stories behind how I captured the images. So I thought I would change that by going ‘behind the photo’, and starting off with one of my most liked photos from Instagram; a River Pride lioness focused on acquiring her next meal.

Watching the pride well after sunset, they began using the greying light of twilight to stalk a distant herd of impala; not wanting to disturb the hunt, I had to park some distance away and use my 500mm telephoto lens to get closer, but even that required a fair crop in post-processing; thank goodness for high resolution cameras! The most challenging aspect was getting a shutter speed fast enough to freeze the action in the low light; I shot this on ISO 3200, but if this was taken today, I would likely have gone up to 6400 or even 8000. The reason being that the software that is now available to deal with noisy image has improved tremendously, and high noise is now far less limiting than before. With the camera set up, I waited for the lioness to begin the stalk and clicked away as she did. Upon reviewing my images, the shutter speed was too slow to freeze the action in most of the images, but I was delighted that at least one image came out sharply enough!"
